I saw the headline “Local teachers’ union calls for more mental health support.” I love me some mental health talk, so I took a look. I thought this take—you might even call it a takedown—was interesting and helpful:
“Mike Axler, school psychology supervisor, said the school system is sharing many mental health resources online for students and family. He also said staff is available to work and communicate with families that need them using online options.
“Axler added that though the school system hasn’t gathered formal data, in some cases, mental health conditions may be conflated with emotional reactions.
“‘As clinicians, we make it a significant point to disentangle the two, because one of them is a normal and healthy response to stressful circumstances, and the other one, you know, constitutes something that’s more pathological and ingrained,’ Axler said.”
First of all: Amen. Secondly: perhaps this is actually an argument for better mental health services or at least mental health education, so that people recognize that difference: totally predictable and typical grief and stress and worry, versus a clinical depression or anxiety or other chronic condition.
Basically, I think everyone should try out therapy, if only so that they can find out for themselves whether they need it or not. 😆

I was trying to contact the case carrier for my HH student and her go to message on her inbox listed mostly contacts for mental health issues. Perhaps that's what she's mostly contacted for. Didn't help me with my issues however! But it's good to see so much help being offered up front.
