A day at the beach

With autumn looming, we decided to spend Saturday in Ocean City, MD, which is about 3 hours away. We left at 6 a.m. and got home around 8 p.m.

It was awesome.

Theo, who is normally very cautious, totally caught some waves. By "caught some waves" I mean got hit in the face by some waves but that's about as much catching as I would expect a 3-year-old to do, and he actually enjoyed it. Matt and I each got some swimming time in. Both kids loved playing in the sand and the waves for hours on end. We probably could have stayed even longer, but we were hungry and no one (not even me) found my cooler full of snacks very appealing.

Our lunch/dinner was an adventure in itself (a sit-down Pizza Hut...bleah...we were desperate) and we got on the road a little later than we had planned to. Then we got caught in an hour of pre-game + construction zone traffic--Washington Redskins vs. Baltimore Ravens, could MDOT have picked a worse Saturday night to be patching concrete on the road from Maryland to DC?

There were only a few other low points: I forgot to put sunscreen on Theo's face and ears (got everyone else's faces and bodies and Theo's body, but somehow completely missed his face--good thing he had a hat on), which I didn't realize of course until too late. And also, another fun moment was when I turned around to see Theo with a used cigarette in his mouth, which he had found on the sand near the boardwalk. Always a lovely image. I almost threw up right there.

Speaking of throwing up, we were all so tired that night that I absentmindedly put Ida's sippy cup of milk back into the fridge when we got home--the sippy cup of milk that had been sitting on the sand for several hours and then in a bag in the car for several more hours. Not knowing what I had done, Matt took the cup out of the fridge the next day and gave it to her at lunch. When I went to clear the table from lunch I realized what had happened. Fortunately, she didn't seem any worse for the wear and when I asked her if it was good she replied cheerfully that it was.

Oh well, no one died and it was great to catch one more beach day before September rolls around!

Ha Ha! "Oh well, no one died..." That always makes a good outing. If I use that standard, then so far ALL of our family outings have been good ones. :)

Hahahahaha that was funny. And I feel bad, I live 45 minutes from the beach and have gone 3 times this year. :(
