Navy Beans Navy Beans Navy Beans, Meatloaf Sandwich

I wish I could eat pizza all the time, but apparently that's not good for you. So I try to eat vegetables and all that stuff...but it's hard. Especially at lunch.

I used to love eating in the cafeteria in the building where I work. There are a lot of healthy choices, and it's super-cheap. However, now that I have worked here for a year and a half, I'm getting a little tired of the offerings, and have become very aware of the unhealthy choices--you should see what some people leave with. The thought of grilled cheese, fries, and mashed potatoes 'n' gravy for lunch (don't forget the cheesecake) just doesn't really make my day! Increasingly I place myself upon the mercy of the cook who decides the soup du jour.

{"Excuse me, Flo? What's the soup du jour?"
"That's the soup of the day."
"Mmm, that sounds good. I'll have that."}

Even the salad bar has become unattractive to me--also partially due to my observations of other people. I mean some folks have a real aversion to the greens that make a salad a salad, according to me. I see them leave with their salad-bar plates heaped high with olives, beets, salami, shrimp, those weird tiny pickles (hey, those are green--sort of), crumbled-up eggs, and goldfish crackers. Maybe some token iceberg--for fiber. 3 extra helpings of Ranch dressing on the side.

Ah well. There's always that little slice of humanity that I like to call the mall food court. It's just across the street. (I've blogged about this before, I know it.) Food courts as a rule are dirty and squalid and smell of grease but I go sometimes just to get out of the cafeteria rut. And to window-shop in the mall while I munch my soft, oily excuse for a pizza. It's always pizza, 'cause you know I'm not going to Long John Silver's. Or Schlotzky's.

{"Oh, look! My favorite New York pizza place, [Sbarro]. I'm gonna go get me a New York slice!"}

The best days are when Matt swings by and takes me to eat somewhere Not Within Walking Distance. I feel so free on those days. The options are limitless. Rumbi, Barbacoa, Bajio...

{"Mmm...yummy."}

Just wanted to tell you a little bit about what it's like to be me each day.

And, now I need to get back to my beef barley soup, which is probably about as good for me as a pickle-salami salad.

i feel for people who have to eat out every day ( i am at home consuming a very boring PB&J), because unless you have a pretty high budget, the selections are pretty bad health wise.

plus they are so tempting. who wouldn't fries and a malt every day?

or like i did in high school, ding dongs and a milk - daily staple.

gross

Yeah--I don't so much *have* to eat out. I do pack my lunch sometimes--in fact I always pack snacky things to eat throughout the day. My current favorite is de-strung (or would it be...strung?) string cheese on Triscuits, yum. I also eat lots and lots of carrots. But as for the main meal, it's more of a laziness thing.

Also...I feel ya on the high school diet thing. I don't remember much about lunches in high school--I think I usually packed my lunch or ate at Wendy's--although I did consume about a package of Top Ramen a day as an after-school snack.

In middle school, a popular lunch often consisted of nachos and a lemonade slushie. Or perhaps Cool Ranch Doritos and a can of Sprite? All I needed was a dollar. Or maybe, if I didn't have a dollar, then a Snickers. For protein.

I could talk about food all day. Especially food that's bad for you. At least I'm better now--I don't even like soda anymore.

Oh yeah and don't even get me started on my freshman year in college. Anyone who had Dining Plus knows what I'm talking about: vending machines are your friend. A typical breakfast for me consisted of a package of Hostess donettes. No, I was no stranger to the freshman fifteen. Gross. Good thing Matt has reformed me.

Yeah, don't get me started on food. I don't get enough. Right now I have rice, PB&J (but no bread), and some seasoning packets.

I'm not exaggerating.

Also, Lizer, glad to see you're listening to The Arcade Fire. Do you like it?

I recall providing all of you with lunch items of choice - so don't blame me!

And I recall thinking that they were pretty lousy choices (a steady diet of pb&j, pudding cups, applesauce, chips and juice boxes just doesn't do it for me - except for maybe the applesauce - which is becoming a snack staple for me with low-fat graham crackers)

Anyway, you are well and healthy in spite of teenage lunch habits - ah youth!!

This is mom posting as dad once again.

Actually I do find pretty fair victuals at Skool Lunch on S. Temple. Alice introduced me to that one, I remember, when Barb was in town, right before Alice moved to the Ukraine.

And, Hannah--I like AF okay. There are probably 4 or 5 songs on that album that I like, especially the Neighborhood songs.
