That's right, woodchuck chuckers!

I hope you had a lovely Groundhog Day.

I've seen this movie maybe...20 times? and every time I love it more. I love the progression of Phil Connors' character and how he grows to really love Rita and does what it takes to become good enough for her. So awesome. It's much deeper than it seems, Billy Murray haters!

Chance of departure today: 100%

In honor of my favorite holiday (ahem) I leave you with this case of weather schizophrenia. We got home from California in January and 2 days later it snowed. BOOOO (said I) but my kids were SO excited.

Then 2 days after that, snow was totally gone and it was 70 degrees. Twilight Zone music...or perhaps the theme song from An Inconvenient Truth. If there is one. Or perhaps: "Predictions show, a steady low. You're feelin' just the saaaaame"

Of course nothing can compare to a 90-degree day in Monrovia just after New Year's. It just can't. January is really one of the only times I am this happy about a 90-degree day.

This week has been beautiful with temps in the 60s. Ahhhhhh.

Welp, sorry, gotta go watch my favorite movie. "To the groundhog." "...I always drink to world peace."

Does he have to use the word "poopy"?

A reminder about that oft-neglected holiday (yesterday if you forgot) that brightens the darkest of winters each February: I decided I needed a label for posts about the movie Groundhog Day.

Yeah. Yep, I do.

"You speak French." "Oui."

(I love the pause at 1:50 before he whispers, "amen")

"Well, it's Groundhog Day... again..."

Would it be Groundhog Day if I didn't post about how much I love the movie Groundhog Day?

I think not.

"Told you. Call me Bronco."

Feel free to leave your fave GHD quotes in the comments. If you don't have a favorite quote yet, you know what it's time to do. Watch it tonight!

Cherry blossoms are blooming on my street.

Winter, slumbering in the open air, wears on its smiling face a dream of spring. - Coleridge
(I'll be honest, I heard it first from Phil Conners.)

Off to see the groundhog?...

...Think it's gonna be an early spring?

If it is not already your tradition, may I recommend viewing Groundhog Day sometime soon if not tonight. It is in my personal top five--top three, even?--and that alone may be reason enough for you.

This morning I awoke to the melodious sound of birds chirping outside my window. Birds chirping! I was in heaven. Spring is my favorite, as are birds chirping outside my window in the morning.

Apparently Punxsutawney Phil did see his shadow (thumbs down); however, General Beauregard Lee of Georgia, another groundhog of whose existence I was only made aware today, did NOT see his shadow (thumbs up). I would be willing to bet that Georgians will have an earlier spring than their northern neighbors in Pennsylvania, so this split decision does in fact make sense.

All I care about is that we get an early spring here.

Don't Forget Your Booties

"It's like I said...I love this film. I've seen it over a hundred times."

I hope you all enjoyed your Groundhog Day and that you watched and loved the Bill Murray film last night as so many other people did the world over.

Groundhog Day also happens to be my grandpa's birthday. Represent!

Here is a sampling of the cardie and booties that Next-Door-Neighbor Olga made for Theo before he was born. Next-Door-Neighbor Olga and her husband Gus come from Chile. They are retired and don't see their grandchildren very often, so they like to visit with Theo and me and hold him and give him his chup. He likes them too.

Um...then he spit up all over the sweater.

The Month of Love

It’s GROUNDHOG DAY!

“Rise and shine, campers, and don’t forget your booties, cause it’s cold out there today--it’s cold out there every day…”

Had to quote the only movie devoted to Groundhog Day—at least the only one I’ve seen—on Groundhog Day itself.

Now that that’s over with, let’s discuss February, aka The Month of Love. A funny/strange boy named Don in one of my wards in college gave a talk in church one February around Valentine’s Day and opened with the line, “I just love February—it’s The Month of Love.” No clue what his talk was about, I just remember that opening line. You really had to be there, I guess, but anyway. Since then I have adopted the pseudonym for myself whenever I refer to this, the second month of the year.

Let’s backtrack a little more: I’m a holiday person by nature—my mom used to give us little presents for almost every holiday, not just Christmas and Easter—socks on Halloween, a book on Valentine’s Day, a new outfit on St. Patrick’s Day, whatever she was in the mood to give. When I was in college she sent me decorations for every holiday, and she continues to send me socks for every holiday. I believe my love for holidays has stemmed from this tradition. Maybe it wasn’t as consistent as I remember, but whatever, for the sake of the story.

I can remember waking up on Valentine’s Day mornings when I was in grade school with butterflies in my stomach—the kind of excitement you have on Christmas mornings. It wasn’t especially because of any specific boys or anything, or even about boys in general—I just loved the day. I loved pink and red; I loved paper doilies; I loved candy; I loved making little mailboxes out of lunch bags or shoeboxes or whatever and taping them to the side of my desk at school for my classmates to fill with Strawberry Shortcake/Star Wars/Barbie/Hot Wheels/etc.-themed Valentine cards. Those days are gone, I suppose, but I still love The Month of Love.

As an aside, I never really had a “Valentine” of my own to speak of until I got married—to me, boys still aren’t the point of Valentine’s Day. It’s all about pink and red, etc. And of course about good friends, who would give you Barbie Valentine cards if you were still six.

My enthusiasm for February in particular has dwindled slightly since I moved to Utah—while February skies are clear, blue, and beautiful in Southern California (except for this year, I gather), they’re equally cold, gray, and inversion-y in Salt Lake. HOWEVER. My enthusiasm for pink and red/paper doilies/candy/Valentine-cards-in-a-box-from-Sav-On has NOT dwindled. Hannah has joined me in my annual “Wear Pink and/or Red From February 1st Through the 14th But If That's Not Plausible, At Least On the 14th” quest. I would like to invite all readers to participate. Male readers, that might be kind of hard, but I believe in you. I think Valentine’s Day haters will come to feel the spirit of the season if they try this out.

I actually wear pink a lot, because—I don’t know why, I guess I like it, but anyway, there’s this lady at work who almost every time I wear pink, she says, “You’re certainly pink today! I’m so glad pink has come back into style. You know, for awhile it wasn’t very ‘in’.” I paid little attention to this remark the first time I heard it—but like I said, I wear pink a lot—once a week at least—and she always makes this “pink wasn’t very ‘in’” remark. I’m wondering if she’s trying to tell me nicely that pink still isn’t “in.” But I’m also wondering when this period of time was that “pink wasn’t very ‘in’.” I’ve always worn it. Did I totally miss the “pink not ‘in’” stage? Or should I just not trust her because she’s 30 years older than me and knits all of her own clothes? Just curious.

This post was long and ponderous. Sorry about that. Enjoy your Month of Love.

P.S. I have nothing against a) being 30 years older than me or b) knitting all one’s own clothes. It’s just that the pink remark is kind of weird, so I got a little defensive. Sorry, work lady.

Oh yeah. Happy late Groundhog Day! I watched the movie last night, in honor of Punxsutawney Phil.

"Rise and shine campers, and don't forget your booties cause it's COLD out there today!"
"It's COLD out there every day, what do you think this is, Miami Beach?"
"NOT HARDLY!"

"What if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today."

Bill Murray. Solid guy. And Chris Elliott. Whenever I see Chris Elliott I can't help but think of (1) my cousin Jesse Terrill, (2) Tostitos commercials, and (3) his old show "Get a Life." Remember, Hannah? The driving test episode. "What is this, one of those nine-shooters?"
