This summer I got a new phone and I decided to keep my old one (a stripped-down version with basically nothing but iMessage, FaceTime and the weather app) for the kids to use occasionally at home. Not surprisingly, they took right to it.
I actually have been meaning to send that phone's iCloud address to you and a few other family members. I haven't quite figured out the details yet. But they love the idea of texting and face timing with family on "their" phone.
