The kids slept a lot in the car on this trip. Well, Ida and Lars did. Theo hasn't slept in the car since he was maybe...I don't know. An infant? Seriously. It just doesn't happen for that guy. Ever. For Lars, on the other hand, it happens every day. For Ida, it happens every once in a while--every day when we're on a fun trip and they are going to bed at 10 or 11 pm every night but still waking up at 7.
We stayed in a cabin in Heber City with Matt's parents and his brothers and all their families. This cabin was legit--4 deer busts. (Or whatever you call them.) One fox...coat. (Needing a brush-up on my taxidermy vocab) Multiple framed posters of wolves, bears, and other such predators. All in addition to wood paneling and forest-themed upholstery.
This cute cousin moment has the added bonus of illustrating said sylvan sofas. (Vocabulary word of the day. Didn't care enough to google taxidermy terms but I was compelled to find the adjective form of "forest." Bonus that it turned alliterative/sibilant.)
I went on a solo run the first morning and it was as beautiful as you'd expect a morning run in the Uintas to be. Went on a group run with 2 of my SILs another day and that was even better. I love, love Matt's family.
The cabin had a little swing set in back which was great for the littlest ones.
Amazingly beautiful weather lasted our entire trip.
When we got back from Heber, we got to see my cousin Karl and meet his lady friend (definitely a highlight--I miss Karl so much. I can gush because he doesn't read this). We also got to see my sister Phoebe and my cousin Erika and their kids. Love when I can maximize a trip to Utah by seeing California and Oregon siblings and cousins.
It was hard to say goodbye to cousins, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, and parents we love so much. It was especially fun since Chad and Annie's kids are close to our kids' ages--and the older kids were all sweet and kind to the younger ones. It was a great trip.
Why do I not have any photos of Phil and Lynnette? Bummer! We love you all and miss you!!
Oh and by the way, these were Theo's 39th and 40th flights. (I counted them recently.) Kid has been around.
And too significant not to mention: these (especially the DC-->SLC flight) were by far the BEST flights we have ever had with kids. It helps when we put them three to a row and plug them into a DVD player, and two of them sleep half the time. Across the aisle, Matt and I talked, read, watched TV, and luxuriated in the ambiance of a Southwest flight. And got to know our seatmate, who happens to live in our neighboring ward in VA.
Of the many trips we have taken, this was definitely one of the more successful ones. If success is measured by my kids being pleasant. (And let's be honest--it is.) It helps that they are getting older. No matter the issues, though, it is always worth it to visit our families. Always! We are so lucky to have them!

Sorry we couldn't get up there to see you guys!! Utah in the summer can be lovely - or hot and awful - but that's because I remember living without a/c in old houses - with little kids! But now when I go it seems lovely!
