I've got my love to keep me warm

My favorite days are the perfect balance of being productive and having fun with my kids. Today was a day like that. The high was 24*F according to my phone, but it hung around in the teens for a lot of the day. Given the ridiculous amount of cold, I decided not to go anywhere and not to get dressed. Well, it was less of a decision and more of a realization around 2 p.m. that we hadn't gone anywhere or gotten dressed. Well, Ida and Theo got dressed but the two people who need me to dress them were not dressed.

The day started for me at 7 when my alarm went off. My kids wake up before 7 but the alarm is mainly to ensure that I won't sleep through mischief on mornings Matt isn't home. The 2 big kids had gotten up and gotten dressed by themselves without a fuss, and magically Lars stayed in his crib happily too even though he had probably been awake for awhile. Then Theo walked to school with our neighbors. Can I just say how grateful I am for such wonderful neighbors. Anyway, so he went to school and the other kids and I made smoothies and played. Then for 2 hours Lars took a nap, Ida watched You're a Good Sport, Charlie Brown!, and I knocked out my to-do list (mostly filing and organizing and tossing) while enjoying Nashville songs on Spotify and occasionally answering questions from Ida about...whatever.

After Lars woke up we had sandwiches, vacuumed the basement, and played some more until Theo came home at 3...again with my neighbors. (I promise I'm not always the taker in this situation) The 2 neighbor boys stayed here and played for an hour, then Theo and Ida went back to their house with them for another hour while I made dinner. They came home at 5, we ate dinner and talked about the day, the kids took baths (a relatively rare occasion in the winter, truth be told), everyone participated in cleaning up their rooms, and they were all in bed and quiet by 6:30. Having gotten a lot done this morning I feel zero pressure to accomplish anything else until tomorrow, even though I have plenty that I could do, so I am going to eat ice cream and watch a movie.

I just had to write it down because it was just such a perfect day, even though most of what was perfect is kind of silly. Well I mean obviously there were some tears and fights and whatever, but nothing too stressful and nothing that lasted very long. And none of the tears or fights originated with me, which is pretty great. Lest I leave out my favorite person in the family, any day is better if Matt's here, but obviously that's not part of everyday, middle-of-the-day life. I wish every "everyday" could be so boring and so wonderful. I guess I wouldn't be so rapturous about it if it happened that often, so I'm just going to bask in its memory and be happy that this perfect day was a day in my life.

I remember days like that - I probably read a book though, rather than getting organized - maybe that's why I'm still trying to get organized!! Glad you got to have one!

Those perfect days are elusive, so when you get one it is extra special. The thing I have come to realize is that they usually cannot be planned, they just happen. We need to enjoy them when the come!
