A good day

I loved today.

Like yesterday, the weather was hot but breezy and not humid. I woke up refreshed from yesterday, when we spent the morning at the park and the afternoon/evening at the pool with generous and thoughtful friends. The kids only got in a couple of fights at breakfast. We spent most of the morning outside on the lawn with our neighbor and her kids who are Ida's and Lars's ages. Then Theo had swimming lessons, then the kids all took a nap (Theo had quiet time), then we played in the sprinkler until dinner time with the same neighbors, along with another neighbor who also has a baby boy Lars's age. Then the kids took an hour-long bath while Lars napped and I attempted to clean up this dump (always in sight and earshot of them of course). Then we had pizza and smoothies. Then we read stories until it got dark. Now everyone is asleep.

I'll say it: Lars is a dreamy baby. My other babies, while lovable, were never so mellow and I could never predict when they would eat or sleep until they were at least 4 months old. I know that starting tomorrow he might refuse to nap or start screaming for no reason. But I just wanted to record that miracles happen and sometimes newborns are awesome all on their own. Desperate sleepless nights aside, and yes there have been a few of those. As I have already recorded. I can't remember the last time I slept more than 3 or 4 hours at a time... sometime in May I think. There have also been plenty of temper tantrums (me), tears (me), mood swings (me), etc. Also, Matt and I both have ridiculous colds. But I certainly can't blame Lars for any of that.

I have always rolled my eyes at people who didn't want their newborns to get bigger. For the first time I can see why they might say that. Going in at the end of nap time to find a smiling, cooing 6-week-old is a gift I will not soon forget. Even at 3 a.m. after nursing him and changing his diaper I can't resist coaxing out a few of his signature, smiley grunts. What a blessing in our home, one that I have not particularly done anything to deserve. His pleasant disposition might not last but I'm just not going to worry about that. Today I am so thankful for sweet little Lars.

So glad to hear about lovely days like this - it's important to remember those days!! (For when the bad days come!)

I feel like I never comment because I can just read your posts on google reader. I love it when you share stuff like this, it is so motherhood. I loved this past baby more than all my other ones, and I think that's how it goes. That being said, I didn't realize that I had post partum depression/anxiety until just last week, so it was a delightful past 5 months of Cal's life, but also hard, and a relief to get it all taken care of. So there are definitely the wonderful moments and that's why you're a mom, and then inevitably comes the next day when everyone in the house is crying except your husband who just got home from work!
