We shared a truck with our friends Sterling and Jessica and their tomato plants. Look how cute Jessica is. Love her outfit. Love AnnDee's outfit too. (Just kiddin', AnnDee. But I do actually think those are pretty cute sweats.) I took exactly 5 pictures of the entire 3-day trip and 3 of the pictures were of the truck.
Maybe four years isn't that long, but it does seem like a long time ago. It was fun to jump in and do something new. Fresh out of school, no jobs, baby on the way, why not move across the country while we're at it? We lived in a tiny apartment in NW DC for a few months before moving to our current neighborhood. Lucky for us, Sterling and Jessica have stuck around too and we get to see them often. Also lucky for us, we've gotten to go to California and Utah twice a year every year so far; our parents come visit at least once a year; and my sister moved here!
When I think about it I realize it's really weird that for the past 10 years I have been at least a day's drive away from my family; a day's flight away for the past 4 years. Now that we are settled here and know we will likely be here in this house at the very least until Theo and Ida are in elementary school, I feel very much at home. But something is still missing. I can't help but look into the imaginary future and think, even hope, that someday we will end up closer to where we started.
Don't get me wrong: for now and for however many more years, who knows, maybe even decades, I love it here. I really love it. I enjoy our everyday life. There is so much to love around here, between dear friends and changing seasons and endless lists of places to go and things to learn and do. But sometimes it's fun to dream too. I guess I did the same kind of dreaming when I was there, about coming here. Funny, right?

4 years is a long time - it's enough time to graduate from college or complete high school or go on two missions or go from being a teen to a young adult.
It almost seems longer ago to me. Not sure why.
It's good to be content where you are - because where you are can change - contentment usually can go along with you.
I feel the same way! I am excited to see where we end up 10 years from now. Who knows, maybe we'll be in the exact same place, but I secretly hope not-I think I like the change that moving brings more than I realized.
Good quote Granny Babs! I distinctly remember you guys visiting us when WE moved into our condo, but it was longer than 4 years. Maybe like 6? Do you remember what you were doing? I have had "mom brain" for the last 5 and a half years
I want to stay in California forever, so come back. The End.
We have lived a lot of places. I found out a long time ago that where you are doesn't usually have to do with how happy you are. I just want to be where Tom is!
i agree with leslie. i've found that no matter where we are, i can be happy as long as robbie and i get to be together. cheesy but true! haha.
my hoooome is where the heart is, sweeeeet to surrender to you onlyyyyy.
Sarah, we did visit you 6 years ago! When Matt was in law school at the U of U, we went to DC for a summer; he had internships and I temped. It was really fun. We traveled a lot, and didn't really work that much!
I agree with your post--there's something about being able to live near your real home that's pretty darn fun. Not that I'd know that, but in theory it seems neat. I'm glad you like DC so much, it seems like a nice place to live. I'd like to say I'm only happy as long as my husband is there, but that's not true. I'm too much of a "change is bad!" to love NC so I have to make a conscientious change of thoughts/attitude to say, "Okay, the weather is horrible, I'm surround by white southerners with no fun close cultural places to visit, but I can like this place. I can like it."
I really think it's because I was tainted by growing up in Cali in the best town outside of the best city. I will adapt! Maybe if my bro and sis in law move out here that will help!
This whole post made me a bit teary eyed. Four years really? I can't believe we brought those tomato plants. Actually, I can believe it. I am glad you still live here too!
My hair was so blond and I was so skinny...
Oh well. At least I have 2 cute boys to show for it!
