I have never considered myself a particularly Jane Austen type of person...as much as I can totally dig her themes as far as I understand them (romance, economic and social standing, men and women being total idiots without each other), I never could get through more than a page of one of her dense and flowery tomes, and Colin Firth never did it for me either. This is basically me any time I've tried to read Pride and Prejudice. Me and Joe Fox.
But I guess I just got in this mood lately. Valentine's fever maybe? Not the books, just the movies. In the past week I've watched way too many hours' worth of Austen movies. I think the crazy, I mean devoted Austen fans were on to something all along.
Please forgive me if in future conversations with you I inadvertently slip in words like "tiresome" or "pleasant" or "countenance."

Funny you should bring this up - I'm reading Austenland!!
i have read nary an austen novel. (but i did read austenland, if that counts for anything.) i did like the new pride and prejudice and the gwyneth paltrow version of emma. i am probably making all sorts of true austen fans cringe right now.
Hannah, I am with you, I never watched any of the BBC ones or read any of the books but I loved the 2005 Pride and Prejudice and also the 1996 Emma. I like the 2009 PBS Emma even better, though. I'm trying to decide whether to watch Mansfield Park (1999) because I loved Jonny Lee Miller so much as Mr. Knightley, don't know if I want to see him as Edmund. (or Edward or whatever his name is in that one.)
Mansfield Park is good and a little risqué. I'm sad you weren't really Austenized. I thought all girls go through that.
Oh...I love Jane Austen movies. Especially on lazy Saturdays when I want to do nothing but curl up in a blanket and lose myself for a few hours. I like pretty much all of them but my favorite is still the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice-as long as you have like 5 hours to devote to it.
so, nicole, did you get a copy of emma with your first box of tampons? i must not be a real woman.
i kid, i kid.
I guess I was too busy reading Betsy-Tacy.
Betsy-Tacy is something I would LOVE to see done tastefully in a mini-series. I saw the Anne of Green Gables movies before I ever read the books, so I loved both. (I tend to like movie adaptations better if I see them first, then read the book.) But I wonder if I would love Betsy Ray on film as much as I looooove her in the books.
Even though I've read all of your posts about Betsy-tacy, I still have no idea what it's about or why you like it so we will agree to disagree.
@hanner, if you must know I got my first tampon from a friend. My mom never discussed it with me, assumed I would figured it out.
All jokes aside, did you guys get my JM CD?
About time girl!
I love all things Jane Austen. I don't know why, I can't explain it, but I've read and loved every one of her books. Sigh.
