Just one of those weeks

(Ida loves wearing Theo's clothes, particularly this track jacket which Theo happens to hate.)

Normally I almost pride myself on being dressed and clean and ready for the day before I go anywhere. I think maybe it is the East Coast influence. Not many people here go around in sweats, at least not that I can see. After living here for a few years, although I still hang on to a few West Coastish habits (e.g., flip-flops, air-dried hair, untucked shirts) I can understand that mentality. In general I don't see what the big deal is just to run a brush through my hair and put jeans, contacts, and a coat of mascara on if I don't have time for a shower--as opposed to running my errands in sweats, glasses and a hat. Is it really that hard to take five minutes and put myself together?

However for the past couple of days I have just had too much going on and not enough sleep at night. So for two days in a row I wore running clothes and glasses everywhere (preschool, library, doctor, store, library, store), hid my fourth-day hair under a hat, and tried to pretend that it had been fewer than 48 hours since my last shower. Should I mention the fact that I went for a run somewhere near the beginning of those 48 hours? (chose to do that instead of showering.) Yikes. Matt's new mantra has become, predictably, "Please don't stand / so close to me."

Anyway. I guess my point is that I need to stop being snobby about wearing sweats and a baseball cap, since I have for the past 2 days and no one seemed to look at me askance. (not that I would have noticed since Theo is really into public tantrums these days and I try not to make eye contact with anyone.)

But I don't plan to make it a habit or anything. I don't think so anyway...

"air-dried hair" love it. I doubt you look anything but lovely even if you feel otherwise.

I always think people look fine - but maybe they aren't.

I think it's true what they say - we are the only ones who notice ourselves!

I realized it probably sounds like I care if other people shower or wear sweats, which I don't. But I feel pretty gross when I don't shower...getting dressed and putting on makeup helps diminish the gross feeling.

My #2 hairstylist, who is from Canada and went to hair school in Europe, says Americans are way too casual about their clothes and style, especially moms. Her hair always looks great and her clothes always look as though she is ready for anything--a night out at the club, brunch with the Queen, whatever. I'm pretty sure I would never wear sneakers to get my hair done at her salon.

She also doesn't have kids, which brings me to the next point I didn't spell out in the post, which is that the more kids and the more activities, the less sleep and the less likely I am to try to look nice when I'm heading out to stand in line at the post office or pick up milk and bread at the store.

Also, along these lines, I really found this discussion interesting: Vanity, What Is It Good For? The author compares Vermont and Northern Virginia in these terms. I've never been to Vermont but I imagine the amount of caring about hair, makeup, style there is similar to what I encountered during my time in Seattle. Refreshing actually.

Last week one of my kids teachers told me I looked so nice. Which made me wonder about how I usually look. I admit, my recent schedule has messed with my getting ready time, and I'm going along not quite ready for the day. I just love/need sleep, and am resisting getting up an hour earlier to get myself together.
