In related news, Adam Lambert's singing "We Are the Champions" with Queen initially made me cringe a little. Not just because of Kris's complete flatness, and not just because of the former contestants' arm-waving, but also because of Adam. I thought he had stage presence similar to Freddie Mercury's, but no contest with the voice. It just sounded BAD to me.
Then I watched the video a few times and to be honest I am coming around. I should have voted for him. During the season I was up and down but ultimately I have to say, I kinda dig Adam. Definitely in an ironic way--I especially enjoy how he and Brian May have apparently been through a lot together (note "it's been no bed of roses," 1:38 in the video)--but also for real. (for reals.) (fer rills.)
Which reminds me: Arnel Pineda, Journey's lead singer. When Matt first showed me this video, I about died laughing. Can you believe how much he sounds like Steve Perry? Until he starts going super flat on all the high notes?
OK, enough with the amateurs, I'm going to go watch "Barcelona" again.

I am going to bet that Robbie will comment on this post based solely on the inclusion of Arnel Pineda.
By the way, I don't know if you got the end of my chat that day, but I remember thinking that MC and FM were boyfriend and girlfriend because of this picture. And I remember thinking, "She must be so sad that he died."
I get the chills every time I hear "BARCELOOOONA!" I know I'm not the only Terrill who feels this way.
Also, I don't know when I realized that Freddy Mercury was the lead singer of Queen. I thought he just sang with opera singers. My exposure to music is so scattered when I think about it.
Mike and I just watched an entire Queen concert on PBS the other night and we were bemoaning the fact that Freddy Mercury is dead. The dude could sing!! We both agreed that, given the chance, we would definitely have gone to that concert.
(And no, I don't like Queen because of that stupid First Knight movie and the ridiculous crowd chants of "We Will Rock You," I just think they were an amazing band. No offense to all you First Knight fans, but, seriously?!)
Oh, and listening to "Fat Bottomed Girls" when I run is very motivational. That is my little running tip for the day!
In response to watching an entire Queen concert on TV--I just watched Queen's Live Aid performance on YouTube (in its entirety). Robbie said, "you're only in Paris once, right?" And in my defense, it's been pouring all day today. And also in my defense, it was a darn good performance.
Alison, was it the Montreal concert? I love it!
And Live Aid...
Freddie, good times.
It WAS the Montreal concert! Did you watch it too?!
I'll have to check out the Live Aid concert on YouTube, sounds like a great Friday night activity. :)
you have no idea how many times i've listened to this video since you guys showed it to me. most of my office has even come around to it. all i want to know about arnel is how many hours of karaoke it took him to master that wicked vibrato.
Why is it that I haven't thought about "Barcelona" in years? I need to add it to the mix.
Hannah, I too get chills when I hear him singing Barcelona and I have sentimental reasons for it.
I guess I had to be reminded of that scene from A Knight's Tale. I remember them doing the complete sound tracks for several movies. Flash Gordon and Highlander come to mind.
Hearing Freddy sing "Who wants to live forever" is both haunting and ironic.
And yes, Queen are fantastic.
Barthelona. ¡Claro que sí!
"We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" are definitely not my favorite Queen songs, although I still like them. I would think of The Mighty Ducks when I hear those songs over A Knight's Tale.
Actually I liked A Knight's Tale, repurposed classic rock and all. (My favorite choice on that soundtrack is David Bowie's "Golden Years.") I like pretty much anything with Heath Ledger (may he RIP) and/or Paul Bettany.
