Hannah wants to see more pictures of my kids, so here's Theo. And me, reading Real Simple.
One of my favorite gifts from the past few years has been a subscription to Real Simple from my mom. My favorite part of each issue is always the recipes, specifically the "Five Easy Dinners." You may know that I am no chef. If I could choose between cooking and cleaning, I would gladly focus all my energy on cleaning. I see the merit in menu planning, but long grocery lists depress me, so for my own emotional health I need to keep meals basic, while still providing variety for our physical health.
I have a binder full of Real Simple recipes, some I haven't tried yet and many that have become staples. They are generally pretty easy (the ones I choose anyway), don't rely too much on canned stuff, and use ingredients that I have around. There are also lots of vegetarian recipes, which is nice. (I'm not a vegetarian, I just eat like one.) (I promise I made that up on the spot.) (I love parentheses.) Getting recipes from a magazine is less intimidating to me than picking one out from a cookbook.
Anyway, so the other night we showcased some picks from RS's December issue, and they were yummy. Matt made the soup so I can't promise how easy it is, but the cookie bars were very simple to make and it was all very tasty. Don't you think Real Simple should be paying me for this?
Squash and White Bean Soup with Parmesan Biscuits
Ginger Chocolate-Chip Bars - These are way better fresh than they are after even just a day. But they're still good later, just not as soft.

I personally appreciate the Real Simple recipes as well
You can't say that I'm the ONLY one that wants to see more pictures. Can I get some backup here??
Saw that soup recipe and it looked good - have Matt tell me how hard it was!!
Glad you like Real Simple - I love it too - but my favorite part is the one where they ask questions like "How do you avoid burnout at Christmas" or something along those lines.
They've never chosen one of my answers though. I don't even want the prize - I just want to see my name in Real Simple!!
I also love Real Simple and pictures of your babies. Love this one of Theo and your long hair.
i tore out the soup recipe as well - but haven't made it - but it didn't look hard mom - i have no doubt you could make it with style and verve.
I love Real Simple, too. Great photo. Theo is so cute.
Okay, so no one is backing me up on this.
I always wish that I had a subscription to Real Simple :(
It's great to see you've added a Christmas playlist. I have to enjoy Christmas music in secret until at least December 1st because Tyler McScrooge gets tired of it if we start sooner. Bah humbug.
it's not that i don't love ida just as much...but i forget to take pictures. rarely do i have a hand free anyway, at least when both kids are awake. i now blog almost entirely with one hand.
but as i said, hannah, i am going to try to provide the photos that you desire. sometime soon.
also--i think the soup was pretty easy. most soups are, particularly ones with so few ingredients. i just didn't want to claim that and have matt counter with, "sure, it's super easy when you're lying on the couch holding a baby." probably the hardest part is chopping things. (i really dislike chopping...and grating.)
Hannah - I have been reluctant to send you a subscription because you have not stayed in the same place for a whole year since you lived here at home!! Magazines just don't seem to get forwarded.
Settle down and I'll send you one!!
hadn't thought about that...i never got a subscription until we had been in salt lake for a while. eliza
I like your hair long too, and I would also like to see more pictures. Huzzah!
And, you could have fooled me that you were not a "good cook". It just seemed that you are. I think you are, so stop being modest.
