What would you choose...

Mazda5 ("the mini-minivan")--'07ish,

or Toyota Highlander--'04ish?

My thoughts:

The Mazda has a split second row--I love this even though it makes for 6 seats instead of 7. It's probably the biggest perk for me, randomly enough, but I think that makes sense since the second row will be full of car seats and therefore difficult to fold down to get to the back in a Highlander, should you want to.

The Mazda is sporty and cute, which is hard to tell from the picture--you can best appreciate its mini-ness in person. If you are a guy or otherwise like trucks/big cars, this might not be a huge selling point, but I like it. It has sliding doors. So, lots of perks of a minivan, without actually being a minivan.

The Toyota, though we need to go a little older to stay in our price range (we'd go older on the Mazda if we could), is more common and more available and therefore we have more choices--leather seats (not an option for our price range in the Mazda), automatic seats, perhaps even heated seats, things like that. 4-wheel drive, which you can't get in a Mazda5. Also, the Mazda5 doesn't have electronic stability control, which some would argue you don't need in a smaller vehicle, though it's going to be required in all cars within a few years. It does have an ActiveMatic transmission (similar to Tiptronic), which took me a second to realize, as I tried to get up to 35 while in first gear on a busy street a few weeks ago.

I don't love that every time I drive anywhere I see at least 3 Highlanders. (Although as Matt says, "There's a reason for that.") I don't love the look of the Highlander but I like it better than most smaller SUVs; in general, most SUVs and minivans seem bloated to me.

The two are in a similar price range and have a similar amount of space inside--both have third rows which will mostly remain folded down--the Mazda has slightly less cargo space behind the third row and slightly less space between the first and second rows, but because of the split middle and the windows, it looks roomier inside than the Toyota. The Mazda is a 4-cylinder and Toyota is 6...meaning we either get better gas mileage or more power. The Mazda would be newer, since the first model built was in '06, but again, more perks like leather seats are available in the Toyota. Also, for our price range and availability in the area, we'd probably have to buy a Mazda that was previously a rental (with 30K-ish miles on an '07).

I like the way they drive about equally. They are both built on car chassies.

I can't tell you much about colors, since we have been looking at a few different ones, but for example, of what we drove today, the Highlander was black and the Mazda was silver. Most likely we'd get leather seats in a Highlander and upholstered in a Mazda. We're planning to drive a few more on Monday.

Any thoughts? I think in general we're both leaning toward the Highlander, but I've gone back and forth a few times, and it will depend on the specific combination of price, miles, condition, etc. since we're buying used.

We'll most likely buy one or the other this week.

The only comment I have is that my husband's brother got a mazda and it has needed some expensive things on it repaired and it's only 5 years old (as in, it happened within the past three years, so it's still a relatively new car). I think highlanders look super cool and I trust a Toyota a lot more. Have fun car shopping!

hmmmm. tough one. i think the mazda looks cooler, but i love leather seats. the highlander seems kind of old lady-ish to me, probably since i see a lot of old ladies driving them. the sliding door is cool, the reliability of toyota is also cool. good luck!

it seems to me that mazda has kind of overhauled their image in the last few years. i think they are supposed to be more reliable than the ones of old.

my mother-in-law has the highlander and LOVES it. and my friend with 3 small kids has the mazda and they love it so much that her husband bought one, too. i think you can't go wrong either way.

I haven't seen any old ladies driving Highlanders - but then the only person I know who has one is Connie W. - she isn't exactly old.

I say go for the best deal financially. That's how we chose our house - and even though there's not much about it that I truly love - other than the people who do/did inhabit it - it has certainly "done the job" as they say.

I was going to buy a car this weekend as my car is getting to costly to repair but I decided to forego that idea as I was very disatisfied with the whole car buying experience.

I did look at a Toyota dealership and saw the Highlander. Nice car and I know a couple of people who have and like that.

But I had a Mazda Protoge before and it was a good car.

But I think that I would choose the Highlander.

I have to agree, Phoebe--the Mazda is totally cooler looking than the Highlander, all other things being equal. Highlander is totally an old-lady car. I don't know why, but the lines and shape just kind of bug me. Matt likes the look of the '08 model but I don't even like those very much.

But for everything else, I think the Highlander might be a better bargain.

I don't really think you can go wrong here. They both look great! I do like the idea of you having a mini minivan. I think that is just way too cute!!!

Once you start adding carseats to your cars the cool factor goes way down. Don't worry the kids will eventually Mom your ride for you! Go for the best deal and leather is a major plus for kids!

Check this out and you will know what I mean.

I think gas mileage, if you're mostly going to be driving in the city/suburbs, would be a huge concern for me, as well as ease of getting kids and others in/out. And in a city/suburb, smaller is better, it seems, if you can get away with it. More parking spaces.

I also drove a Highlander to move my stuff from Philly to NY, and I have to say, it didn't have nearly the amount of space wanted. Cramped in the front, too, for me and Brendan. The minivan I rented to move me up here was much more satisfying, um, spatially.

I think all the Highlander preponderance tells you is that Toyota does a really good job marketing it.

And leather seats get really hot in the summer. I never really understood the appeal.

There's my two cents.

i would go for what gives you joy - you are going to spend A LOT of time in it. And definitely leather over cloth.

I think the van style is better for small children. Ours is an SUV and I would have gone crazy if we'd had it when our children were small.

I loved our Volvo wagon - great mileage, 7 seats, and I felt really intellectual when I drove it :). I also loved that the children could get in 3 ways (the 2 sides and the back) And it's super lean - i could fit it anywhere. the dumpy factor bugs me about my current car.

We have a van with sliding doors and it helps A LOT with loading and unloading little ones since you don't have to worry about a door getting pushed open and dinging the car in the next parking space. I used to bonk the kids' heads all the time before when I'd take them out of their carseats (when we had a Corolla), but not anymore. That probably has to do with just having a "taller" car, and both of your options may be "tall" enough. Leather seats are easy to clean, especially for the liquid spills. I would also trust a Toyota more than a Mazda.

we are in the same boat. I personally like the Highlander and la-love leather seats so that might seal the deal for me. car shopping is hard. like bonny I love the volvo wagon (not that it was in your top two) but they don't make them with third rows anymore and that is a deal-breaker for me. good luck!

I say go for the gas mileage. You never know how high gas is going to go and the less you have to spend on it the better! Plus the Mazda just looks "younger."

The only thing I have against the Mazda is this; in our Ward there is a crazy granola mom with a mullet and kids that never shower that drives a Mazda 5. She bugs me. And every time I see one, I think of her.

I guess you could still buy one, and then I'd change my mind.

I had a Mazda Miata, back in college, forever ago when they were still cool, and I loved it. Never had a problem with it.

Go with your gut.
