Completely happy

On August 29, 2003, Matt and I got engaged. (That's 5 years ago today if you wondered.)

You might wonder why I have a picture of Matt with Theo here instead of Matt with me...well...I am sadly lacking in pictures of Matt with me, at least ones I haven't posted before. I need to get better at that.

Also, I don't have any pictures from the actual event of engagement. Possibly because I was too focused on the actual event to go dig through my room and find a camera--this was before the digital age (okay, before my digital age...I had only barely gotten my first cell phone, although I did have a blog), plus it was about 2 in the morning.

I also don't remember anything we did that day. We went out to dinner, maybe. We had been talking seriously about marriage all week (having flirted with the topic all year) and had pretty much decided on Thursday, the day before, that we would do it--get married, that is. I expected an official proposal would happen within a month or so, once Matt had a chance to buy a ring.

I do remember that sometime around 8 or 9 we went to Target with my roommates Hester and Brooke and bought Trivial Pursuit, then came home and played it. Everyone went to bed except for Matt and me, and we talked about--something I also can't remember. Geez. I don't remember what I was wearing, either. At any rate he kept getting up to go look out the window (it was raining) and I asked him what he was so agitated about. He said he thought he'd left the car light on, so I told him to go turn it off. He came back and within minutes, maybe seconds, he was interrupting our conversation by putting a ring on my finger.

Funny how I remember hardly any details from the night--maybe because he completely surprised me?--but it was such an important night. Mostly I just remember that I was completely happy. I am still completely happy and I can still thank Matt for that.

I don't know that I've heard this story - in its entirety any way.

Enjoy the day!

And we love Matt too!

(and you and Theo of course!)

It is funny, my most vivid memories of my husband, baby, or family (ie the most important things in my life) aren't those days that are "supposed" to be special (the wedding day, engagement day, honeymoon, "Birth" day). I usually have the most vivid memories of simple days spent together doing regular things, but for some reason they stick in my mind.

I think it is good to remember how you felt (completely happy!) rather than what you wore, or what you were listening to etc...
