I feel like I know a lot of people who exercise regularly throughout pregnancy. Pumping iron, downward dog, a brisk run in the morning, that kind of thing. I don't want to scoff at these people. I just want to know--how do you do it? Intellectually I understand that the more you exercise, the more you want to do it. But how do you even get started, let alone keep it up?
Before I got pregnant with Theo I was a machine. I was busy with work and school and church, but I jogged three times a week, cross-trained on the alternating days, and went for long runs on Saturdays. That perpetuated healthy eating and sleeping habits, which in turn propelled my desire to exercise.
And then, I got pregnant, and then I was sick, and then I was tired, and then I was huge, and in those nine months, although I did make dozens of half-hearted attempts, I never once broke a sweat intentionally and I ate a million percent of my daily allowance of sodium and sugar. I like to blame at least some of this on Pregnancy Insanity. Do you want to know what I was eating when I went into labor? Top Ramen. Gross! And do you know what I did with the half-eaten bowl of Top Ramen? I put it in the fridge so I could finish it when I got back. Sick.
Then for an entire year after that, I maybe, MAYBE went jogging once or twice a week and I never set foot in a gym. (Gyms are expensive here.) Granted, nursing burned a zillion calories a day, so there went that motivation. Plus I was doing all kinds of exercising just in my daily life taking care of a baby and then toddler.
My point is that even when I was a dedicated superwoman in the exercise department, the pregnancy that followed was almost completely exercise-free. So now that I am pregnant again and I haven't really exercised seriously since before Theo was a twinkle in my eye, I feel like it is a lost cause. But I have lofty goals: to exercise every day. Not to mention the fact that ever since 15 weeks I have prohibited myself from eating high-sodium packaged foods, and informed myself that I would be eating fruit or yogurt instead of candy or ice cream; vegetables with every meal; upping iron intake; remembering my vitamins. (These are guidelines...don't think I've given up ice cream or anything.) Not only do I feel better when I do all this stuff, I know that it is really the only path to take for a healthy pregnancy.
And yet, each day comes, and all I want to do is lie around, and all I want to eat is macaroni and cheese and pudding. Mainly because I still hate cooking. If I had a personal chef this would totally be a piece of cake. Oh and I never cared about this before but now all of a sudden when I'm not supposed to allow my body temperature above, what is it, 102, all I want to do besides lie around is take hot baths. Figure that one out.
The added pressure of wanting a VBAC and fully expecting another marathon labor is not helping. You would think it would help, but no, it doesn't. I know I need to be in good shape for that but it feels like a million years away.
Complaining about the "rules" for a healthy pregnancy is like complaining about the expectations for members of my church. My answer to those complaints is, "You're here because you want to be, not because you have to be. If you'll just do this stuff and focus on the big picture, you'll be happy." So, I am saying that to myself. I am pregnant because I want to be. If I just do this stuff and focus on the big picture, I'll feel better. It's not like macaroni and cheese is going to get me there.

Well it's nice to know someone else who wants to eat macaroni and cheese. I've had it a few times this past week. And I had all but sworn off the stuff. And don't get me started on all the other crap I've been eating. Ugh!
I love being in the water, personally. Once our pool opens you are welcome to join me anytime! I can help with Theo (if he'll let me). Just walking up and down the pool is good exercise. And you will be cool as the heat of summer approaches.
:)
Yeah, I was bringing Easy Mac to work because I was too lazy to make a PB&J sandwich. How depressing. I quit that habit quickly once I started getting made fun of by Robbie and my co-workers.
I still haven't quite gotten out of orange lunch mode, though. I had carrots and string cheese with my sandwich. (And Cheez-Its. I'm loathe to mention that to you though.)
Robbie and I started taking aerobics together, though. I don't really like running with other people, and I don't get motivated when other people want to run anyway, so this is a good way to be motivated to exercise. And it helps that he (surprisingly) enjoys the class a lot, so it's fun to work out together. We decided that running would count as our necessary alone time. So, we're getting there. And we don't go out to eat all that often anymore, which is also helpful.
I just need to start packing better lunches. (That's something that Robbie volunteered to do once we get married. Boo yah, Robbie.)
Just had macaroni & cheese last night for dinner. Ah, the original comfort food! My craving with Katie was peanut butter and chocolate ice cream at Baskin Robbins. I justified it by telling myself I needed the extra calcium.
See if there is a pregnancy exercise class at your local Y or gym. I did that with Hannah - and hers was my easiest birth. Somehow exercising with other pregnant women does the trick. (for one thing, it's not too strenuous - at least it wasn't then - and everyone knows just how you feel!!)
Or just put Theo in the stroller and take long walks.
Have you ever heard of yoga with babies? Maybe you and Theo could sign up that could be interesting.
Totally get an exercise partner. I swam with someone 3 times a week my senior year of college and it definitely kept me from skipping out.
Sounds like your pools needs to open already. That will be such great exercise! It is a million times harder than I thought it would be to get to the gym now, but I am managing a few times a week....not much though.
I don't really have advice for you. I just wanted to say that I understand. And I wasn't that sick when I was pregnant. Just ridiculously tired. So hang in there. Don't force yourself to do something that will make you hate it. Your superwoman exercise desires will come back.
Thanks for the encouraging words, everyone! I went running yesterday ("running") and it wasn't too horrible. I'm going on a walk tonight, and another run tomorrow. Friday I clean the whole apt so that counts as my exercise for the day. What!
And our pool opens Memorial Day weekend...I am SO looking forward to that and have already enlisted Matt to make sure he comes home in time each night to let me go swim laps before the pool closes.
I do still eat mac and cheese actually. But I justify it by buying Annie's or another brand that uses real cheese and whole-wheat pasta.
Pam, I am so happy that you ate PB and chocolate BR. That is my FAVORITE. Every time I go to BR I get that.
I'm so glad my sister and I are not alone! I can exercise so well and eat so well, and then I get pregnant. I get feeling nauseated all day so I stuff myself with food so then I can't exercise because I feel so heavy and weighed down doing it. I don't know if that makes sense at all. Plus, I always feel junk calling my name, it's this downward spiral, no exercise->eating junk->even less exercise. By the end I just give in and make my babies from ice cream. It makes me feel better that someone as little as you has those cravings too.
