She's Real Fine, My 409

That's the Beach Boys song that would not leave my head this morning as I woke up with a harshly coughing start and checked the clock. 4:09. Sleepless me. Poor Matt has been feverishly lying in bed all weekend at an uncomfortably toasty temperature of 100-103, and I, attempting to be Florence Nightingale with my many offerings of Top Ramen, ibuprofen, and the thermometer, seem to have caught something from him. Maybe.

I don't have a fever, fortunately. But, at 4:09 a.m. today, I did have the sort of dry, sore throat that can only come from having a cold in the middle of the night in the desert with the heat on full blast and the windows all closed. I stumbled through the dark house and got a humidifier and put it as close to my stuffed-up face as was humanly possible. Maybe it's mental, or leftover from my childhood, but some dry nights a person just needs humidifying.

Then I thought back to my refusal to get a flu shot at work a few weeks ago. Well, it wasn't really an actual refusal--I just thought, "Shot? Ew, needles. FluMist? Ew, virus dripping down my throat." And then I just sort of never went to get one.

Then I kicked myself. Figuratively.

Then I hummed the Beach Boys to myself, alternating wheezes and gags, until I finally fell back to a restless dream about wandering through a combination Old Navy/Food4Less warehouse looking for a present for one of my coworkers, only to keep stopping and saying, "Oh, this would be so cute for ME!"

Then I woke up this morning with an actual vise on my head. Well, it was literal, but it felt like it could have been actual. Called in sick. And here I am, on the couch. Blogging my sick head out.

I just hope I don't get what Matt has. Do not want what I haven't got.

I'm not sure what it is - I guess you just need your old mother to take care of you, but I never remember you guys having the kind and amounts of colds and flu that you seem to have once you leave the relative safety of your mother's clutches!! I don't get sick much - I come from hardy stock - but you guys never seemed to get sick much either.

Like I said, I must have done something right!! (And I hope you feel better soon!)

(I'll bet you're not eating right!! Not enough pumpkin cookies and burrito casserole!!

I don't remember ever getting very sick either. I think these days I don't get much sleep, and I work and stress a lot more than I did as a youngster. And occasionally I do things like eat 2/3 of a Ben & Jerry's carton in one sitting (an entire carton of Chocolate Brownie, in case you were wondering, is 1,000 CALORIES!! what the!!). I don't know what comes over me.

Plus, it doesn't help that Matt's been sick and we've spent the past 2 days inside, breathing the same germy air.

Mom, come take care of me, too.

Poor Eliza. Hope you feel better soon. It seems like we all have it, and everyone we know has it or is getting over it. Good luck with that.
