In a Little While I'll Be There

On Saturday night, Matt, Hannah, and I are going to listen to U2 play from a mere...several hundred feet away.

u2

Not quite as impressive as my sister Bonny standing right NEXT to The Edge as they pick their respective daughters up from school...that's what I get for living in Utah and not Malibu.

The last time I saw U2 it was right after September 11th and I was 18 years old. Ah, I was but a child...haha. That was my sophomore year of college; I was there with a boy who I liked as a friend, but not "that way," and I remember when they played "One" or "All I Want Is You" or one of those types, I looked around at all the couples hugging and thought to myself, "Someday I need to see U2 with a guy that I really like." Silly me.

And it will be nice, this time, to have a guy I really like with me. And a girl I really like. Hugs all around. tee hee.

I will miss the heart-shaped stage, though.

So anyway, in preparation, I've been listening to lots and lots of U2. You know how there are some moments in some songs that compel you to rewind over and over, or at least turn up the volume in anticipation? There are lots of moments like that for me in U2 songs. Some moments I like for different reasons. Sometimes I like the words, or I like the music, or it makes me laugh, or I like the way Bono's voice cracks, or I just...like it.

Here's a list. Not comprehensive. Not in any order. Not intended to scare you away from being my friend because I'm such a list-writing, Irish-tenor-loving maniac.

*If you wanna kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel. On your knees, boy.
-Mysterious Ways

*That girl, that girl, she's mine, and I've known her since, since she was a little girl with Spanish eyes--oh--when I saw her, in a pram they pushed her by. Woo-hoo--my, how you've grown.
-In a Little While

*Early morning, April 4th--shot rings out in the Memphis sky-y. Free at last, they took your life, they could not take your pride. In the naaaaaame of love...
-Pride (In the Name of Love)

*Don't tuuurn around, don't tuuurn around again. Don't tuuuurn around, your gypsy heart...

Who's gonna taste your saltwater kisses? Who's gonna take the place of me?
-Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses

*Lay down your treasure!
-Love and Peace or Else

*Looking for...M'sieur Daniel Lanois, s'il vous PLAIT!
-I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (live)

*Ooooo-ah!
-cowboy whoop in "Trip through Your Wires"

*Hey now, check your change.
-Stay (Faraway, So Close!)

*(pause) Yeah
-beginning of "Desire" (I usually get about that far into the song before changing the track)

*Hey-ey-ee-yeah-ee-yeah-eah
-beginning of "When Love Comes to Town" (I really don't like this song, but I listen to the first few seconds, laugh, then change that track too.)

*Uno, dos, tres, catorce!
-Vertigo (I didn't like this song, especially this part, until I saw the iTunes commercial and the silhouetted Bono doing that funny "gracious hand wave" as he says "catorce." Does anybody know what I'm talking about? Now I love it.)

*Leave this heart of clay, see you walk, walk away.
-Bad

*Gonna run to you, run to you, run to you, woman, be still....Gonna run to you, run to you, run to you, oh, woman, I will.
-Trying to Throw Your Arms around the World

*Ooh---ooh-ooh-ooh!
-Hard to put that one into writing, but it's the super-high "ooh"ing at the end of "One Tree Hill." Matt introduced me to that one.

*Lemoooon
-Lemon

*Any time Bono gets into the falsetto range

Okay, done.

yay. YAY.

My humanities teacher got in an argument with a girl over U2's credibility as artists. "Auteur" was the word he used, actually. Hilar'. He was like "do you WANT to fight about this? because I'll win."

What a list! I've met another Queen.

Hey, would Matt be interested in sending Phil a resume? Yes, no, maybe so? Go on, give it a go. Seriously, if you both think Reno might be an option.

the best was on SNL when Colin Ferrel was Bono with that Latin mariachi guy doing a skit about uno, dos, tres, catorce.

now that wa funny - and actually colin ferrel sings suprisingly well. Maybe it's that Irsh beer.

AND I'm insanely jealous - I've always wanted to see them and whenever they come to town, we've either just had a baby, or Bruce talks me out of it - or the tix are $500 for nose bleed seats. I need to become friends with someone at the Staples Center.

Amy, I told Matt about it. I'll let you know--Reno isn't a top location for us but we're always interested in potential job connections. What kind of law does Phil practice?

Bonny: I think the answer is clear: next time, you're just going to have to make another Utah trip out of it! Tickets are cheaper here (although they sell out just as quickly!) and we Utah fans know how to make it fun.

I missed the SNL skit but that does sound very funny.

Construction law, but he dabbles in many other areas of the law.

Eliza, we are all for Reno. Only 2 hours way from your beloved Phoebe! Go on Matt, send the resume. And you can actually own a home there before you are 45.

how was it? i am jealous. many of these are my favorite parts, too. i also love in "Exit" how it progressively gets louder and louder...and also when he sings, "oh my love, oh my love, oh my love."

I also love the guitar at the very end of "With or Without You" even though that is evabody's favorite.

If only "close to Phoebe" were our only criterion for a place to live...ah well. Um, can you give me any other reason for Reno besides close to Phoebe/Amy and cheap housing?? Cause...I can't think of any!

MD: it was so good, I must blog about it soon before I forget all the magical moments.

yes, you should post soon, because some of us don't have an exciting life and must get a little bit of it through yours.

And I can always use a few magical moments.

Another favorite moment of mine is the opening strains of "I Will Follow," with the guitar and then Bono saying "Yup" or whatever the heck he says. hahaha. Anybody know what I'm talking about? Also I LOVE "Yo eyes make a circo. I see you when you go in there...yo eyes, y-y-yo eyes, y-y-y-yo eyes..."

They did play "I Will Follow," in case you wondered. One of my very fave songs to dance to.

I am preparing a "best moments of Saturday's U2 concert" list. Mentally.

Welp, I just gave a listen to "I Will Follow" and there's no "Yup." Clearly I'm confusing it with another song...or perhaps I am crazy.

There is a temple in Reno and you are 45 minutes from one of my very favorite places in cali, Lake Tahoe!
And there are a lot of fun people that come to play in Reno, such as the 10 Tenors and Kenny Rogers. So maybe thatisn't a big draw. But they have a Circus Circus for those out-of-town visitors.
Do you need more reasons?

I think if you are considering moving, the only option is Malibu.

I mean truly.

Mudslides, Fires, Road Closures, Traffic - yes, but some really fun stories, and parties, and the beach, and nice clean air, and very nice people.

The SNL skit was very funny. The last time U2 came to Austin, I got an ear infection, and my eardrum ruptured 3 days before the concert. Luckily we were able to get tickets in Pheonix, while we were there visiting my sister, so lucky Betsy got to see them twice. They didn't come to Austin this time around.
