Songs Part II, etc.
I’ve been thinking more about songs that sound like other songs.
In particular, songs whose intros are exactly alike. I got to thinking about this the other day when a song came on the radio and I couldn’t tell if it was “Smooth Operator” by Sade or “Kokomo” by the Beach Boys. It ended up being “Smooth Operator.” It didn’t take long to figure out, but I thought it was funny that for about 5 seconds I wasn’t sure which one it was.
A few other songs with similar intros…
The guitar intro to “Pieces of Me” by Ashlee Simpson sounds suspiciously like the beginning of “Drive” by Incubus. (At least, I think it’s “Drive” I’m thinking of. Incubus also sounds a lot like Uncle Kracker—or Uncle Kracker sounds a lot like Incubus—so maybe I’m actually thinking of an Uncle Kracker song. Not sure.)
“We Danced Anyway” by Deana Carter starts off with chords that sound like “Free Falling” by Tom Petty.
That’s all I’ve got for right now. I heard another one the other night, but I can’t remember what it was. Will update when I think of more.
But I probably won’t think of more, and even if I do, I’ll forget to post them. Kinda like how the Relief Society has been bringing meals to the family who lives next door to us, and I was assigned to bring dessert last night, and of course I sat up this morning and said, “Oh, crap! I forgot to bring dessert to the neighbors!” (I actually said “the neighbors,” because I’ve forgotten their names.)
Or kinda like how today in the shower I washed and conditioned my hair, then about 30 seconds later began to wash it again because I had forgotten I’d already washed it. Fortunately I remembered before I washed too much of the conditioner out.
I’d share more, but I’ve embarrassed myself enough already.
On an unrelated note, I've recently become a huge fan of the song "Killer Queen" by Queen. I try to fit the phrase "killer...quee-een" (intoning it, of course, just like Freddie Mercury) into as many conversations as possible.

That's funny that you are liking the KQ right now... last year at exactly this time, Katie, Courtney and I went through that same phase. The only reason I remember is that I was moving and Queen's Greatest Hits was the only cd that I hadn't packed. That and Wilco. And we kept pausing it and trying to learn the lyrics.
So, we're lame. Sorry.
What, you didn't go online and print out the lyrics so you could memorize them?
(Hannah and I used to do this. Going through old junior high/high school stuff recently I found printouts of lyrics by Tupac Shakur, the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy, and Will Smith, among others.)
Was "Millions" good? Have been contemplating seeing it.
Someday if you ever win my "Name that Song" contest on my blog on the 17th of every month. I will send my list of names I like along with it.
Yeah, I liked "Millions." The kid in it is completely adorable. And the director, Danny Boyle (of Trainspotting, A Life Less Ordinary, and 28 Days Later fame) has a cool style, I think. (I haven't seen any of those other movies. Mostly because they look very disturbing.) And you have to love British accents.
You're on, Marcy--I'll try to remember to go online tomorrow and see if I can win the contest. Perhaps I'll send you some of my choice names in return.
Eliza,
Sorry about my late contest posting! It was one of those days where I was "off" all day. Honestly, you should have seen what I showed up to church wearing...Thanks for checking though and you'll have to try again next month!
I'm going to check out Millions.
And here is a sampling of my names:
Peter, Caleb, Thomas, Henry, Isaac, Owen.
Cecilia, Nora, Nina, Sally, Jill, Virginia.
And there's more where that come from...if you ever want to send yours, me email address is on my profile page. Have a good day.
And for my tenth comment today:
I also love Millie and couldn't bear that I left it off.
Cute names! It seems we have a lot in common, Marcy...first the Arlington thing (I lived in Rosslyn last summer), then the blue album, now the names. I'm a fan. I'm a big fan of old-fashioned names. Nina's very cute, hadn't thought of that one. I like Cecilia...I remember when I was a kid my mom forbade us from listening to that Simon & Garfunkel song.
I also like Millie--I wrote a play once about a girl named Millie. Her real name was Miller, though. And I wrote the play when I was ten. And it was a horrible play, albeit emotionally wrenching (Millie's mom died at the end after struggling with a fatal illness). Fortunately Millie was able to accept her mother's death by curtain time. I think the play--it was more like a screenplay, actually--closed with a shot of Millie and her brother playing in the street with Millie's voiceover about accepting sadness. It was really all very maudlin. Not surprising I never made it as a "tween" playwright.
