Well...

I didn't go see The Village. Sorry guys. But I will eventually see it and let you know what I think about everything. Wanna know what I did instead last night? Well it did involve breaking into our second-story bathroom window. Matt and I decided to go running instead of see The Village - are you proud of me and my stay-in-shape priorities? - because we decided once we ran, showered, ate dinner and everything, we couldn't go to the movies, because we'd get back late. See, when you're an old hag like me, "late" encompasses anything after 10 p.m.

OK, I'm not actually an old hag, but I do get cranky without a proper REM cycle.

Aaaanyway...so we did the run (it was nice - good weather yesterday), got back home around 8:30, and Matt, who was in charge of the keys, realized he had brought the deadbolt key (which we never use because, well, we never lock the deadbolt) instead of the doorknob key. No credit cards around (i.e. to shuffle between the doorjamb and the door, in hopes that it will move the lock. Works like a charm in every apartment I lived in in college. Quality BYU-approved housing, I tell ya. Always felt very safe there in Provo). The options, it seemed, were to call the manager and pay a $50 lockout fee (highway robbery!) or to break in.

To be fair, though we are in the second story, it's not as high as a normal second story, because the first story is halfway underground. Still, the bathroom windowsill, which looked the most feasible, is about 15 feet or so above the parking lot. Whatever, it's high. Now, seeing as Matt and I are both hobbits (I'm 5'2", Matt's like 5'....8", I don't know), and there were no ladders in sight, we had a problem. Being that Matt's shoulders are much stronger than mine, and my body is much lighter than his, I was elected to the position of window-climber-inner.

Wouldn't have been much of a problem if (a) I hadn't just run for 45 minutes, (b) I actually had any upper-body strength to begin with. Anyway, so I ditched the shoes and socks, he squatted down, I stepped gingerly onto his shoulders and he slowly stood up as I tried to pretend there were handholds in between the bricks. I whimpered a little bit, looked down at the parking lot and thought it would be good to try to avoid hitting any cars - or brick walls - if the Matt-Eliza totem pole should suddenly topple. After what seemed like hours - it was probably 45 seconds - I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and pretended I was Nadia Comaneci practicing chin-ups. Matt grabbed both of my feet and pushed, I held on to the window tracks for dear life and pulled, and I shimmied my way in.

I felt like Sydney Bristow. I felt like Spider-Man. I felt like Joey Potter (remember how she used to climb in Dawson's window...uh...look, I hardly ever watched Dawson's Creek, I swear). I got a little scratch on my stomach and some dirt on my hands from the window tracks. I hoped no one was watching us and getting any bright ideas.

After dinner and a shower, it was past 10, and I was about ready to fall asleep standing up. However, as Jerry Seinfeld put it, "We FIGHT SLEEP and CONTINUE SEARCHING for entertainment!" You know, when it's easier just to watch TV than to get ready for bed? So, in keeping with the absurdity of the evening, Matt and I stayed up until 12:30 watching Starsky and Hutch.

All in all, a night to remember.
