A simple seed (an old favorite)

I’ve been thinking about a passage from the beautiful, intense magical realism of Like Water for Chocolate. It first struck me as a college student who felt the pain of becoming an adult. Years down the road it struck me when I became pregnant for the first time and noticed how quickly (and sometimes painfully) my body was changing all on its own.

Lately it has been striking me as I have waded further into the world of antiracism. Which by the way is not a straightforward world at all, despite my (or anyone’s) desire to make it so. I have found myself over and over in awkward situations in this world, sometimes of my own making, and I just plunge forward anyway, because you don’t know what you don’t know. And I don’t want to be ignorant. Not now and not ever. So... ouch. I think I might be growing.

"Tita thought of the many times she had germinated kernels or seeds of rice, beans, or alfalfa, without giving any thought to how it felt for them to grow and change form so radically.

"Now she admired the way they opened their skin and allowed the water to penetrate them fully, until they were split asunder to make way for new life.

"She imagined the pride they felt as the tip of the first root emerged from inside of them, the humility with which they accepted the loss of their previous form, the bravery with which they showed the world their new leaves.

"Tita would love to be a simple seed."
