Ok guys, let’s talk about periods some more.
JK. I got you there for a second, didn’t I?
We have had a good weekend. It began with a trip to Trader Joe’s, where the line was long but it moved quickly. I brought home some new treats, which is always exciting! I recommend the Kung Pao Chicken Mochi Balls if you’re looking for something a little different. I also recommend the Chocolate Peanut Butter Mochi if you’re looking for something a little foolproof. Because chocky + PB + ice cream treat, is FOOLPROOF.
Friday is always Family Movie Night. The principle behind FMN is that Matt and I choose the movie, often a nostalgic classic, which is basically to (a) broaden the kids’ movie horizons beyond Angry Birds 2 and (b) allow Matt and me to enjoy ourselves. The problem with this principle is that although Matt and I have many overlapping tastes, we are very often at loggerheads over FMN. I think it comes down to nostalgia, because Matt and I are nostalgic about different genres. He’s not nostalgic about 1960s musicals, but he was a good sport this weekend and we watched West Side Story which clocks in at TWO AND A HALF HOURS. Too long (I could have skipped all the monologue ballads) but still so good. I forgot how much I love the dancing, especially the gang-fight dancing.
On Saturday we... what did we do?? I don’t even remember. Oh it was my mom’s birthday and we had a birthday Zoom call with Name That Tune. That’s all we did all day, other than Matt working on his puzzles, bless him.
On Sunday we found an empty patch of woods that—wait, someone else was already there! This little gnome.
Today is Memorial Day and I am feeling the feels for the people who came and went before me. And for all the people who have fought and died in the name of an invisible justice or freedom, even those who didn’t come before me, but just went before me. And all the people, like Jonah and Jenn, who came and fought during their entire time on this earth, and didn’t stay as long as I wanted them to, and left an indelible mark on me.
Maybe I’ll accomplish something today, or maybe I’ll just remember, because that is what the day is for.

I like this focus - there are not many soldiers in my immediate history - but remembering is something everyone can do!
