Thanks for the trips

Whoopsies! Didn’t exactly start Thanksblogging off on the right foot, did I! My excuse is that we were packing and then traveling all day yesterday. We rolled into Dulles a little before midnight and we finally had everyone tucked in their own little beds by around 1:30 am.

The flight home from SLC went great, despite some turbulence during the landing (ugh)(have I mentioned that I HATE flying)(but I LOVE seeing family and that is why I do it) and it definitely felt like we had turned a corner in family travel. For four hours, everyone sat in their seats, rotting brains glued to various screens and rotting teeth glued to Halloween candy by the fistful. No one cried. No one complained or fought or threw up. The woman behind us struggled with her 1-year-old, and we offered our support and sympathy, having been there soooooooooooo many times.

Have I told you yet my favorite little tidbit about how to define a vacation vs a trip? If at any point during your journey you say out loud, “This is gonna be great!” Then you are  on a trip. Not a vacation. We take a lot of trips. Pretty sure we’ve never taken a vacation.

Anyway so what am I thankful for? So many things, but I’ll kick Thanksblogging off with my gratitude for our growing family’s growing tolerance for travel. We’ve certainly done it enough. Theo alone has been on 60+ flights in his 12 years. I’m sure if you count the times Matt or I have traveled alone with a kid or two, we’d be getting into the 70s and 80s. It’s about time we start getting it right!

  1. Ever since you told me about "this is going to be great" I say it all the time :)

  2. I have traveled more in the last 25 years than I did my entire life - I didn't take a plane ride until I was 20! And I even think I am getting better at it! We certainly appreciate your willingness to travel to see us!!

  3. I relate to Polly on so many levels.

I hate flying too. I’m thankful that the last flight I had was tolerable.
