So let's discuss the inauguration. I opened my window and could hear Obama's speech from my living room. Kidding, but wouldn't that be fun? We watched it on TV. Favorites:
Aretha Franklin's hat.
Justice Roberts and Obama having difficulty with the oath.
Obama's quoting 1 Corinthians 13 and asking our "young nation" to put away childish things.
Rev. Lowery's benediction poem.
So maybe only one "serious" thing that I really took away. All in all it was a momentous occasion which I enjoyed from my couch. I think that if the inauguration took place in May instead of January, I might have considered going. At any rate, Theo and Ida still witnessed it. Actually Ida was asleep but Theo sat on my lap and watched it. Kind of like how yesterday he sat on my lap and watched MLK's "I Have a Dream" with me in its entirety. Didn't budge. I'd like to attribute it to powerful rhetoric but he has had a fever and I think his willingness to take part in history in this manner might be related to that.
Well, he's in! Obamanos!
For a second I really thought you heard from your window.
ReplyDeleteMe too - and I was envying you!!
ReplyDeleteLoved the benediction! And the hat.
It was great. Glad I could watch it in its entirety - the students all watched it.
Although I got two phone calls during - the school psych was apparently not watching it!
we also watched from our front row couch seats....also one of my fav's was Aretha's hat...and of course it was the most exciting part for Chloe. we miss you guys.
ReplyDeleteAretha Franklin's hat...best comical relief for my happy tears.
ReplyDeleteAnd like Babs, I had a call from a client 5 minutes before the inauguration... obviously I knew what her priorities were and will not be accepting her calls in the future.
I think I'm meant to live in D.C. I think WE ALL ARE.
I actually wasn't sure if everyone got Tuesday off or if it was just in this area...obviously it was just this area. And actually a lot of people in the area didn't have the day off, but Matt did, and most people whose offices are downtown did, and government employees, and kids in school.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely fun to have a 4-day weekend. I need more of those. And almost the best part is the 3-day week that follows!
The only other inauguration I remember watching live was Bill Clinton's first. I was in 5th grade. After that I think I was always in school or at work and not allowed to watch it.
I know this is weird but I wanted to see the reaction of all the former presidents to Obama's speech - like a box in the bottom of my left hand screen. I wonder if anything surprised them. It surprised me how (other than Al Gore) they really seemed to be happy to meet with each other. After all the rat races and "clean ups." I told my mom I think it's b/c they share that comradory of the burden of being Commander in Chief. Like, "you're the only other guy who knows what it's like."
