My secret side

I discovered recently that I am secretly part hipster-mom cliché, despite my hand-me-down Kolcraft stroller. This could mean that I should stop wearing my sweats and BYU shirt and pick up some...I don't know, skinny jeans or something. Maybe a new haircut too, or a Polaroid camera.

I'm embarrassing myself....I guess that is part of being hip actually, is heading out of the mainstream, in this case the hipster mainstream. I can be a hipster cliché even while wearing my Tinkerbell shirt from Wal-Mart.

Anyway I enjoyed this article, 10 Ways to Avoid Hipster Baby Names. When I first saw the article I felt in my bones that we had failed. Rule #9: "Don't pick any name that starts with I or Z or ends with X or O."

Also, the article linked to Nameberry, which I enjoyed. I just love baby naming and all that it entails. Here are their entries for Ida and for Theo.

Okay, now that I've read the list, I'm guessing that they're just trying to be funny, and not that serious, but it's still a little bit obnoxious to me and not as much tongue in cheek. Like, do they really expect people to take all these "dos" and "don'ts" into consideration when they name their child? I bet that their children are named something completely "normal," like Kate or William, just to claim that they are SO NOT hipsters, which is another hallmark of hipsterdom.

Personally, I enjoy the names in our family, which pretty much fit in every one of those categories.

Does that make sense? This is life for me every day anywhere south of BYU campus, as people continue to say "but I'm NOT a hipster!" as they waltz around in their deep V neck shirts and droopy beanies.

I'm just saying.

Oh, no, I just learned that Owen is hot and on it's way to hottest according to hollywood. Can I, at this point, say I picked the name before they did and before it was hip? Is it my fault that it took me six years to have a baby and by that point the name I had picked had been grabbed by hipster celebrities. I don't know. I'm actually not even sure what I'm trying to avoid here. I've gotten myself all confused.

I'm confused too - but I'm pretty sure I'm not hip, so I'm not worried.

But Dad and I really did choose some hip cool names didn't we??

The real question is, do we start calling the baby Idalene?
