Don't Remind Me

I'm over being sick, for the most part. But about once a day something weird hits me for a few minutes and I'm reminded of what I'm missing out on now. I think I've pinned down most of the reasons.

When I was sick for those couple of months, I would go through food phases where I could only eat a certain food and I'd eat it every day until I got sick of it. Now I don't know if I can ever eat most of those foods again, because they remind me of being bedridden.

Spaghetti-O's, for instance. I bid those a fond farewell. Top Ramen too. And Popsicles. Ugh. It's making my stomach turn just writing about these.

Also, I'm having trouble with smells too. I started using a new shampoo when I was sick (Redken Blonde Glam, recommended by Hannah's friend Veronica, which is actually a great shampoo) and now I try to avoid using it because the smell (sort of . . . grapefruity?) reminds me of being sick and even though I'm not really sick anymore, it kinda makes me feel sick again whenever I use it.

(Because it was $10 a bottle, though, I just hold my breath and get through it.)

Those types of after-effects make pretty good sense to me. After all, in 4th grade I woke up throwing up Thanksgiving morning, and 14 years later, I still won't eat pumpkin pie if I can avoid it. A year ago I got food poisoning from some garlic chicken and chow mein and you won't see me going near Chinese food now.

But today when I was unpacking from our trip to California (I know, it's been 2 weeks, so sue me) I pulled out a pair of jeans that I wore several times a week when I was sick--in fact I bought them soon after I found out I was pregnant because they were $5, kinda cute, and a little bit loose. To my dismay, just looking at them this afternoon nauseated me and I had to hide them under my bed. Not kidding. I had also bought the same pair in a size bigger, but I'm thinking I just might have to be out that $10 because I can't stand looking at either pair.

So, apparently sight, along with smell and taste, can trigger some sort of memory-related nausea. In me, anyway.

Has this happened to anyone else, or am I just weird? Maybe don't answer that last part.

I think I need to go lie down.

I believe that associations of any kind can trigger both good and bad reactions. When I was pregnant with Bonny, I was working at the U. I would go the cafeteria each day and get mashed potatoes and gravy - nothing else. After awhile the help just got used to me. The potatoes and gravy made me feel better - and to this day, mashed potatoes and gravy still makes me feel better!

I was the same way. I would find my "staple" and live off of that for weeks. WNow I hate those foods. Also foods that I threw up I can't stand to eat. With Cruz I had to drink Gatorade to stay hydrated....it was so nasty I can't stand it no. With Kirsten, we went up to a cabin in eastern Utah and I hate that cabin due to the fact that I was so sick there. It's not a lot of fun for me anymore. So I can relate with you. Sorry to hear you were so sick though. Hopefully you feel better by now and things get better!

My house makes me nausiated in pregnancy. My friend would let me come over and lie on her couch and somehow I always felt better at her house (though getting motivated to go down the street was hard.)than at mine.

It's like I'd rather feel sick somwhere else than think about lying on my couch and being sick.

When I was pregnant with Melissa I ate chicken in a bisket crackers. I really don't like those anymore (and haven't for all these years) Yet I also ate chocolate pudding, it was smooth and went down easy and stayed down. I still like the pudding, I think it comforts me (like Barbara's potatoes and gravy)

The Brave Little Toaster still makes me feel sick. I was prego with Cohen and bought that movie for Sadie and she watched it over and over while I lay on the couch feeling quite ill. Nine years later I still get a little urpie when the kids watch that movie! Sounds silly, yes? No! There is nothing silly about feeling sick for 3 months in a row.

I cannot stand the smell of ground beef cooking after my first pregnancy and with Drake's I had a meatball sub from fazolli's and I still can't stand those! I try not to eat any of my fav's during my urpie stage of pregnancy. I just could not stand to hate my bean rice and cheese from Miguel's.

Well, lucky for you you're out of that stage. I'm still feeling sick at the thought of food. Any food. I had lost 3 pounds at my last Drs. visit. Of course, I had 3 pounds to lose, so no biggie. My worst aversions are sweets, ice cream, and cereal. Normally those are all my staples. For some reason veggies and salty things taste so good to me. I was the same way when I was pregnant with Maggie. I would eat salad with no dressing because the veggies tasted so good. Needless to say, I only gained 10 pounds with her, and felt so good. Too bad it changed after the delivery. ;) But to this very day I have a hard time cooking raw chicken. It made me throw up with Emma (71/2 years ago, mind you), and I have never gotten over it. And this time, I'm pretty sure it will be Brussels Sprouts. Don't ever vomit those. Bad. Very bad. Hang in there, babies are so worth it!

i bought a gallon of some antibacterial soap from costco at the beginning of my first pregnancy. after 3 months of sickness, i couldn't stand it, but was too frugal to throw it away. i would cringe/become nauseated every time i used it---so finally I threw a half gallon away. SO LIBERATING!

Sorry about the grapefruit fragrance. Every time I smell it I remember having a boyfriend so I try to use it as often as possible.
