1) We eat a lot of junk food... more than ever
2) We eat a lot of fast food... more than ever
3) We don't eat a lot of vegetables... less than ever
4) We have been getting sick a lot... more so than ever
Having a fourth baby, who is now a toddler, has contributed mightily to #1-3. I am tired, and at dinner time she's super needy. This has happened with each of my toddlers--our diet has just been bad for like a year. Not a lot of healthy meals. A lot of cheap/easy restaurant food and frozen dinners. And mom self-medicating with Reese's and cookies and ice cream.
Also IMO #4 is related to the first three things, and you know what, I am SICK of getting sick!!! Stomach bug got Lars and Polly this week. And me. Boo. Although they sure are cute when they're recuperating.
Anyway so on a whim I decided to do a Whole 30 again. Boom. For the third time. Attempting to reset my taste buds and my brain buds. The first time I technically only made it 20 days (I referred to it fondly as my Whole 20) and the second time was a mere 30 hours. This, the third time, I am serious about it and it's happening. 30 days. I decided at 5:00 pm on Thursday and proceeded to eat a zucchini and a sweet potato and fried egg for dinner. No leafy greens because there were none to be found in the house. See #1-3. The more junk I eat the less I want (or buy) leafy greens because they taste worse and worse. Of course then I proceeded to spend my life savings the next day at the grocery store and I remembered that Whole 30 is prohibitively expensive so maybe that was one reason why it's been a while since I tried it last.
I'm going to be less hardcore about it this time which I feel like is both good and bad. For example I won't be making my own mayonnaise (even though homemade mayonnaise is surprisingly easy and delicious- you just mix an egg and some oil in a jar with a stick blender. Voila) or expecting anyone else to comply with my dietary requirements.
So maybe I'll have a few cheating moments like store-bought mayonnaise (which contains soybean oil, which is why it's off limits--no soy allowed) or other little things here or there, like the cashews roasted in peanut oil I ate last night (peanuts aren't allowed) but I won't be eating dessert or candy or the like. And I will be bulking up on the veggies. And that's what matters.
Anyway. Just thought I'd announce it here. For all the internet to see. Although all it took was for me to announce it to Matt via text, and Instagram immediately started trying to sell me Domino's pizza. Because they're rude and creepy like that.

good luck with the whole 30!! we need a re-set as well. but it will just be me and bruce - the remaining teenagers in the house could care less - they are just starving. all. the. time.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to eat better - as in eschewing desserts mostly - because that is my downfall. I'm pretty good about serving veggies and keeping fruit around for snacking and we don't do fast food much at all. Whole wheat bread is always on our agenda, but it's a never-ending battle - a couple of late nights and I'm snacking away on junk - so I try not to have it around - I may not announce it over social media though - maybe after I'm successful at losing some weight!
ReplyDeleteI'm also trying to eat a bit better. Mostly for me it's cutting out snacks and sweets.
ReplyDeleteUnrelated, nice Oliver! quote.
