What is so rare as a beach day in June

Our next Summer Day was Family Day and we decided to make it Beach Day. This summer I want to make it to the beach at least once a month. We made it on the first Saturday of the summer--not bad.

We left at 6 a.m. and loaded everyone up in their PJs with breakfast in hand.

We took a wrong turn (thanks to my navigating skills) and went way out of the way. Finally we arrived and were oceanside by 10 a.m. The weather was perfect.

Everyone except Matt got a turn being buried. I'm sure they'll get him next time.

Even Lars wanted to be buried, which was so funny. It took a turn for the sad when the kids got sand in his mouth and he briefly cried about it and refused to let me pick him up. I think he was tired.

We have been to several beaches in the area (Ocean City, Virginia Beach, Bethany Beach, Rehoboth Beach) and most are about 3 hours away. This time we went to the main beach in Lewes, DE, where we had stayed in a beach house a few years earlier. It's near the better-known Rehoboth Beach, which is on the Atlantic Ocean and has bigger/better waves. But Lewes is on the Delaware Bay, so the kids could go way way way out into the water without being knocked over. Matt took the kids out one at a time and went out himself a few times. I went out too because I have this weird pride thing/OCD thing about swimming every time I go to the beach. I had to go ridiculously far out to get deep enough to swim. Matt took this picture and I am a dot in the distance.

Arriving so early was key because there was ample parking, whereas when we left at 1 p.m. there were tons of cars driving around looking for a spot. We changed in the bathrooms (they have pretty nice facilities with showers), searched unsuccessfully for some non-fast-food, kid-friendly lunch, and ate overpriced ice cream cones instead, got drive-thru later, and arrived home while it was still light out. I love the beach. So much. Obviously we could be closer but I've been landlocked before, so I'm not complaining about a 3-hour drive. Totally worth it.

  1. I used to take the kids to the beach every Thursday. Making it a habit is the key - as is making it simple. Looks like a great outing - I love the photo of the three of them sitting in the water watching you!!
