Sure plays a mean mix tape.

Did you know I was cleaning out my house? (Have I mentioned it to you yet? I haven't? We must not have talked in a while, then.) I have thus far emptied my house of one entire room's worth of stuff. Ahhhh...it feels good.

Last week I attacked the CDs. Remember CDs? We still have a lot. It has been what, like 15+ years since people started loading music onto their computers? We haven't done that yet. Oh sure, we have a thousand or so random songs on our computers (desktop + laptop + external hard drive all have assorted music stored on them). Maybe about half of those songs are on there 2 or 3 times, I don't know why, but over the years it happened. Our music collection is dismally disorganized. In 2012 we are joining this century, getting rid of most of the discs and getting the digital music in order. I say "we" but I really mean "I," but I think Matt will enjoy the fruits of my labors.

Anyway I went through mixes last week. I think now they are called something like "playlists" but in my day I made a mean mixtape. And then a mean mix CD (or just "mix" as we called them when they were on CDs). My mix tape collection, culled from radio and CDs and even other tapes, includes such gems as The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Third Eye Blind, Lauryn Hill, Jamiroquai, and Reel Big Fish. I think those tapes are still in a shoebox in a closet in my parents' house (maybe). My mix CD collection, culled from Napster, KaZaA, Audiogalaxy, and WinMX in the "2000s," includes lots of Weezer and Beck, 90s "man" country like John Michael Montgomery and Brooks & Dunn, 90s "girl" country like Dixie Chicks and Faith Hill, lots and lots of John Mayer and David Gray, and for some reason I have 3 or 4 mix CDs featuring "Be My Lover" by La Bouche. Also lots of Sting and James Taylor.

I sort of lost steam on the spring cleanout a few days ago but I really want to finish up before March. So I have a few more days. The CDs and music will have to wait a while after that because there are other spring cleaning jobs to be done first. But at least I do have a box of CDs set aside to load on the computer so that the disc versions can be gone forever from my house sometime this year. Except...I think I am only going to keep one copy of "Be My Lover" because I don't need 4. I do need one copy, though. Everyone needs one copy.

Be my lover, wanna be--my--lovah--lovah--lovah...

You're welcome.

  2. i love that you are getting jiggy with the spring cleaning (you like that 90's/00's musical reference, didn't you?

i admit, organizing my music onto itunes was one of my more satisfying projects, esp since i use it almost everyday. love those ipods. :)

  3. also, i'm glad that no one pointed this out yet, BUT—I thought of an addendum to my comment while i was listening to the who on my run today, and i appreciated your pinball wizard reference.

are we the only ones that get each other's references? WE MUST BE SISTERS! :)

  4. i feel a keen obligation to comment on any blog post that mentions my favorite band of all time (slight overstatement, perhaps?): 3eb.

My first impressions of that band consisted of a cassette tape recording of songs 20-11 of Rick Dee's and the Weekly Top 40. For some reason, we got a week old partial recording of this radio show on the island (only songs 20-5!! every week I was always dying to know the top 5 or bottom 20...). It felt like my lifeline to modern society at the time. I can still remember the thrill of hearing Duncan Shiek's "Barely Breathing" for the first time.
