Self-reliance

Ida was pretty sad during our visit to California and very sad during the plane ride home. We found out within a few days of returning to VA that she had an ear infection and nasal infection. As you can imagine I felt pretty awful about the belated diagnosis, not only because she spent so long being uncomfortable but also because we went through about 4 boxes of Kleenex, a tube of Aquaphor, and hours upon frustrated hours of our lives after having wiped her nose every 5 minutes for 2 weeks. Just before the antibiotics kicked in she figured out that wiping her own nose resulted in a lot less pain for everyone.

And she paid it forward to her baby doll. Gross, yes. Funny, yes.

  2. Yes, you always feel bad when you get a late diagnosis. But you will pay more attention next time and be on top of it!

Sarah once had terrible strep throat, but she never complained and we only figured it out when she couldn't swallow her own saliva. We felt terrible, but now I know she has a high pain threshold and doesn't complain much, so I keep a careful eye on her.

It is very nice when your kids learn to wipe their own noses!

  5. Another of my Mother of the Year moments. When Vickie was in 4th grade she had a teacher she didn't like. She kept going to the nurse saying she didn't feel good and I would get the call to come and get her. It went on for several days, and I was told I needed to take her to the doctor to get an okay for her to come back to school. The doctor listened to her chest and said "I think she may have walking pneumonia". Made me feel really good. Live and learn.

  6. The pictures *are* adorable!

And the idea of self-reliance always makes me think of Shirley Temple, who in one of her movies notably boasted: "I'm self-reliant! My mother told me always to be that way." She was definitely a product of her era.

  8. I should have suggested taking her to an Instacare place or something. But then my kids almost never had ear infections -you were all a very healthy lot -so I'm usually not on the lookout for illness.

  10. We kept thinking she was fussy because it was a new situation, not enough sleep, etc., and that the runny nose was just a cold. Definitely wrong about that...also I just realized in looking at the second picture that she is holding down the doll's hand, much like we did while wiping her nose (which she hated and so had to be restrained). However I am probably reading too much into that. ;)
