I really liked this post at Mormon Mommy Wars: Note to Preschool Moms. The author wrote a similar one at her own blog, Is It Just Me?, called Terrible Twos...Again.
It doesn't exactly apply to me because I am neither a mom of toddlers nor a mom of teenagers. But I have been thinking a lot lately about stages of life and how I have felt in each one so far, reminiscing about past ones and looking forward to future ones, and wondering if I will be ready, and wondering if I am enjoying "these years" enough.
Particularly I liked:
I think when we (meaning moms with older kids) talk about parenting, we’re generally doing one of 2 things. Sometimes we’re venting. Some days are just like that, and we need to blow off some steam and have someone else understand just what it is we’re putting up with.
Most of the time though, I think we’re trying to say how we fondly remember the days of being able to childproof the dangers out of our kid’s lives, and making everything be OK with a few funny faces and a couple of zurberts. Days when mom pretty much chose the friends, the clothes, and the music.
And we really, really miss that.
. . . When the kids get bigger, everything is bigger. The clothes, the food budget, life choices, and the consequences all take on new immensity. And THAT is what makes us remember the times that you’re living with a bit of fondness.
I think this can be applied to life phases in general, not just to kids.
For now, I am glad that T doesn't know yet how to hurt me, or anyone; and if he gets hurt, I am all-powerful in making it better.
Your thoughts?
This woman has hit the nail on the head - and this is Mom talking!
ReplyDeleteYep. I love my teenagers and have a great time with them, but I loved the times when they were little too. And sometimes miss those times for the reasons that commenter said!
ReplyDeleteOne other thing about teenagers. Mine read blogs,(all the ones I have on favorites) follow links, etc. So I try to be very careful about the comments I make, especially about them. I try to respect their privacy.
ReplyDeleteHi Eliza! Thanks so much for your compliments and for the link!
ReplyDeleteYour little guy is adorable! I'm sure you're a great mom!
I agree with Karen about being careful what we post about teens. It's a fine line to walk. (Oh, the stories I could tell....) My kids all read my blog, and so far we haven't had a problem. (Crossing fingers)
Hi Justrandi, thanks for joining in.
ReplyDeleteI was also going to say "good point" to Karen. I have learned several times about being careful what I blog about. I'm probably not done learning.
i know i should be worried about the teen years, but part of me doesn't, because bruce and i were pretty good teenagers, so that gives me hope.
ReplyDeletei worry mostly about keeping up with all their activites and late nights.
