I hope you all enjoyed your 4ths.
I did, and perhaps I will post pictures when I find the camera and the USB cord and they are both within arm's reach of my computer while it also happens to be open.
I worked all day while M and T slept, and then we had fun traipsing around DC last night with our friends Sterling and Jess and also the rest of the world (all the while resisting the urge to let out a loud moooooooooo from time to time) and listening to the loudest fireworks of all time whilst constantly brushing ashes from my hair. T, I am thinking did not have fun, although he was still pretty good, but he woke up all night after that, probably as punishment for our keeping him out late.
When will I ever learn.
No, seriously.
Anyway so now I can say if anyone wants to know, that I saw the fireworks on the mall in DC and I can also say that there's no need to do it again.
I'm just not a fireworks person, I mean I am glad to live in this lovely country and particularly so near our nation's capital, but I am just as happy to watch fireworks from 10 miles away where I will not smell like sulfur the rest of the night and have to ask, "WHAT?" every time anyone says something to me.
But I just wanted to emphasize that I am indeed glad to live in this lovely country where at least I know I am free, and also next year Matt and I are just going to rent a movie on "the 4th" if we can't find a babysitter.
We did the Myrtle Ave. fireworks scene - a nice little hometown America moment - but the Hollywood Bowl has spoiled me - it's all about sitting out in the cool, California night, hearing great music, and watching the great pyrotechnics!
ReplyDeleteAnything else feels like less.
And babies will always punish you for keeping them out late - I think they are programmed that way - mine all were!
Lest Hannah or others think that I am not a fun person or that I have communist leanings, I do appreciate a good 4th nighttime celebration. But I think that celebration will have to be without babies, or at least at a place where the babies can be sleeping soundly. Either that or I need to start pushing T's bedtime back to 10:00 or so, which I am not going to do!
ReplyDeleteAnd I do like a good Bowl fireworks show.
When we were out here before a few years ago, we were in NYC on the 4th and watched fireworks over the Statue of Liberty from our friend's office building. Now that is what I call a good setup.
Also we walked like 6 miles (literally) and went to bed at about midnight and when I wrote this post I was very tired.
ReplyDeleteOK I'll stop defending myself.
Eliza, it's ok not to like fireworks or massive crowds or fussy babies. It doesn't make you un-American. (But, that said, can't we all just get along?)
ReplyDeleteThe fireworks over the Statue of Liberty this year were fun - they had ones in the shapes of smiley faces and hearts and, for some reason, cubes. And one that was supposed to be a smiley face and for some reason looked more like a neutral face. Apparently his cheeks didn't explode the way they were supposed to.
I was in DC in 2001 for the 4th. It was pouring and I was a little skittish after sept. 11, so I too had a confusing experience. Somehow, though, I find glory in "checking it off my list" of cool life experiences. I find pleasure in simple things.
ReplyDeleteWhen we lived in DC we saw the fireworks from the marine memorial across the river. Still cool, and no ash.
ReplyDeleteIt is something I would love for my kids to see. Sometime, I guess...
