Oscar NIGHT!
Say "NIGHT!" with lots of flair.
I have mixed feelings about the Oscars. Although I'll never deny my love for Billy Crystal, I'm a big fan of the Chris Rock-as-host choice, despite the "horrible things" he apparently said (I read the interview, okay, and the people who wigged out over it are taking themselves WAY too seriously). I think movies are great, and although "awards for art [may be] idiotic" (CR quote), they do indicate something about the quality of the film. (Titanic excepted.) This "Academy" really does take itself a little too seriously, though, methinks. And I've already expressed my views on awards shows. So I'm not a big Oscar-watcher. In fact, I didn't watch a single second of tonight's--which took great willpower because I LOVE checkin' out what everybody's wearing--I guess you could say that normally I'm a big Oscar-pre-show-watcher; maybe I should just face it, I would love to have a prom, I mean awards show, to dress up for every year too--because I've been "working on a paper" that's due tonight at midnight. I use "quotes" because I've "actually" been "checking the updated winner's list every five minutes."
Not because I bet big money or anything, but because I entered the KSL 1160 contest where if you guess the most winners, you win free movie passes for a year. A year! I love movies, and I never have the kind of money it takes to go see them these days. So I was feeling pretty excited. And in fact, I guessed 18 out of 24 correctly. Not bad--that's what, 75%? There are too many movie nerds around, though, so I'm pretty sure I won't be getting those free passes.
I'll let you know, though. Should a fluke occur and it turns out all the 1160-listening movie nerds voted for "Sideways." (Yeah right, since when do "hip" movies win anything? It's all about the dramas and the sweeping epics.)
I missed all the random categories, like editing, and sound editing, and live action short, and original song. And documentary short. And sound mixing. (Really though, who would have guessed "Ray"? "Spider-Man 2" had that one all wrapped up. Word.) Hey, but I got the important ones right. Thanks to my keen intellect and a subscription to Entertainment Weekly.
LOVED Cate Blanchett's dress, by the way. Loved. Also loved Renee Zellweger's, although she's getting a little on the ueber-skinny side and that hair could be a shade lighter. Hilary Swank, my friend, you are breathtaking, and you made me cry in "Million Dollar Baby," but heaven only KNOWS what you were thinking with that "my navy blue dress is on backwards" look. And don't get me started on Melanie Griffith's fashion disaster. Yes, I checked out photos online while "writing my paper." I should have just bagged the paper and just watched this thing, if only for the clothes and Chris Rock. At least Los Lonely Boys weren't involved this time. (As far as I know.)
I watched the Oscars - for the first time in many, many years. As in not since I was a teen! I was typing some letters on the computer and Noah turned on the T.V. Then he and Dad went home teaching - and being the multi-tasker that I am, I wrote several letters and caught some of the Oscar action. I was voting for "Hotel Rwanda" and Don Cheadle and Sophie - for purely emotional, political reasons.
ReplyDeleteThe part I like about the Oscars are the great montages they do - I loved Yo Yo Ma and the In Memorium and the Johnny Carson tribute and the Sidney Lumet thing - I think someone ought to do a video of just those from the Oscars - maybe someone has!
