Girl talk! Boys, avert your eyes!
By the way I think Matt really, really likes it a lot when I post pictures like this.
Of course you may know that Matt's "Unhinged" is comparable to my "Almost Imperceptibly Annoyed." Long ago Hannah dubbed his disposition "Uni-Mood" and that's almost always true. A metaphor: the pirate ride at Knott's Berry Farm and other assorted theme parks, you know the pirate ship that swings back and forth. I am on the pirate ride and he is standing by the gate watching and talking to me. Every time I swing by I give him a high five. Sometimes I invite him to hop on the ride with me. He declines every time. Sometimes I ask him several times in a row. Finally, once in a blue moon I just reach out and drag him onto the ride with me. After a couple of swings he wrenches himself out of my grasp and dives back onto solid ground. Rolling when he hits the concrete of course, to avoid injury. He stands up, adjusts his shirt and continues our conversation as though nothing had happened.
Moving on, because I am starting to have too much fun with the pirate ship metaphor. I read that PMS does not cause emotions but instead enhances the ones I already have, so I can't completely blame it. Anything I might be fretting or otherwise upset about, becomes the end of the world for a week or two every 4-5 weeks. And minor, daily-type victories become life-altering triumphs. (I scrubbed the kitchen floor yesterday--alert the media!) I should probably just stay away from public gatherings and also resist sending e-mails or writing blog posts during this time.
Apparently it is common for PMS to get worse with age and babies. For me it definitely has. And it doesn't matter whether I am dealing with synthetic hormones or just my own real ones. It happens every time either way, although synthetic is a little worse. I hate being part of this stereotype.
So if I am acting a little bit strange, maybe quoting an excessive amount of melancholy poetry, maybe uncomfortably defensive, maybe overly theatrical, I know it's a cop-out, but you might be able to blame it on my hormones. Or you could blame my personality because most of the time it is that too.
I sometimes wonder what the function of PMS is - it seems like since it seems to be part of the process, there ought to be a good sound reason for it being part of our makeup.
ReplyDeleteBut at least it's understood now. I just used to fly off the handle on a pretty regular basis - and think it was normal - which I guess it was!
I read this to Eric. Hope you don't mind. I love the description of Matt's uni-mood disposition. That is awesome. I also love your pirate metaphor. Again, awesome.
ReplyDeleteI have certainly had a harder time with emotions during this most recent post-partum stretch. The funny thing is, I think I've been un-emotional rather than hyper-sensitive-crazy-roller-coaster-emotional. I think we are all fully justified to hate having to endure this routine experience. Ugh.
(Well, maybe it isn't fair to rate your own emotions, while emotional now that I think of it - oh well.)
Every three weeks I spend a day or so thinking gloomy thoughts and feeling like I will never be happy again. I finally got to the point where I recognize this and tell myself to hold on, all will be well in a couple of days. And it usually is.
ReplyDeleteI do think it gets worse with age. I don't think I had very much PMS until the last 10 years or so. (Or maybe I just don't remember. Possible.)
I think Matt and Brigham are long lost twins. Maybe I love him (matt) too?
ReplyDeleteI think you did a wonderful job with this metaphor. Describes my relationship with Rodger also, probably describes a lot of relationships between men and women.
ReplyDeletePMS can be insane. Sometimes I am so irritated for no reason. My mom said when I am like this to just stop talking, I try but sometimes my whole body is itching and aching to just lash out.
There were days I wondered why anyone was even trying to talk to me. If anyone treated me the way I was treating them I would have run for the hills.
ReplyDeleteI noticed my PMS got worse on pills. So stopped those. I too just try not to voice all the mean things I am thinking during those nasty ten days each month. My conclusion, after dealing with this horrible syndrome every month for the past twenty years? I need to just check myself into a hotel somewhere every month. Then no one can irritate me and i wont do/say things i regret. Then everyone is happy-er anyway. Why do we have this routine trial.?
ReplyDeleteI can't ever get on the Pirate ship ride at Knott's. It makes me insanely sick.
ReplyDeleteNow I wonder if that means something?
2 words- Zo-loft. Get some.
ReplyDeleteI love the pirate ship metaphor. So totally true.
And I got an IUD after Gretta, and let me tell you, what a difference. No periods, no crazy puberty skin, and no periods. Oh, did I say that already? But it really is awesome, and I think it helps with the emotional roller coaster (or pirate ship) we can get on each month.
I want to erase every blog entry I write while half-crazed, but then there'd be no more blog for people to read. I'm feeling that way now--nothing like a whole bunch of sleep-deprivation and a sick Scott to kick things into gear so that I checked out at 4 and literally, literally Craig came home to Rosie attempting to slurp up water from the floor (pretty wise for a 13 month old, eh?) after she spilled it out of our dog's water bowl. Literally slurping.
ReplyDeleteI also considered going upstairs to bed and leaving my five year old to watch over the rest. But then I just yelled at her to keep telling me what they were doing.
Oh, and I feel like I'm ten months pregnant even though I still have seven months to go. A pitiable specimen for a human being. But I just reminded myself I'll be over it in a few days, though. Here's to hoping!
Can you have PMS during pregnancy? It doesn't seem like you should since your not well, you know, but I think I still do. After I saw you at the library I came home to find a urine smelling water draining from our dining room light fixture. I called Aaron in a panic and he started to explain about how light fixtures have "feminine" and "male" parts and I'm freaking out on him because why is he talking to me about this when urine water is pouring on me while I'm trying to stop it. Anyway, I'm realizing this is way too long to say in a comment and just trying to say that I relate to everything you said I don't even think I'm PMSing. Sometimes I'm really jealous that Aaron can keep his cool, but then I think, when does he have to deal with a sometimes crazy toddler every single day and urine smelling water dumping from light fixutres. Never.
