Googledy-goo

Question: (Dwight voice)

Does anyone know how to put a noindex, nofollow code into a new Blogger template (so that Google will leave me alone)? It won't let me.

And so for the first time in my LIFE I have been getting s+p*a=m comments. On posts that are totally old, but it's s+p*a=m nonetheless. This seems to have started with the deadly combination of Blogger-Google earlier this year.

And I'm not into the word verification thing, so maybe those days are just over. Thanks a lot, Google.

Please advise.

  1. Hi Eliza. This is Katie Webb. McBride. Congratulations on a beautiful baby. This comment is not in response to your blog question--I don't know much about the interweb. We are just beginning to shop around for baby things, and after having read your consumer report/personal feelings post on said subject...I want to know what car seat and stroller you ended up with, if you don't mind. You seem like a reliable source of new mom wisdom.

  2. Why hello Katie. We got a Graco SnugRide for carseat. It's #1 safety rated for rear-facing bucket-style seats and one of I think 3 seats that are proven safe in 35 mph crash tests (only 25 mph is required for seats to pass). Also it's cheap--less than $100--and easy to cart around because it snaps in and out of a base. Even without the base it's easy to get in and out of the car.

Because Theo is so heavy, and because I think it's kinda lame to leave him in there all the time, I only take the whole seat out when he is asleep. But it's very handy then. Often he's fallen asleep in the car on the way to a restaurant or Target or somewhere and then I just carry the whole thing in (it fits easily on most shopping carts, especially Target's). Also it's nice for going out to eat even if he's not asleep yet, because he'll fall asleep and then I can stick him in it.

One small problem is that I think the weight limit is 20 lbs and he's almost there, so we'll need to get a convertible seat soon (one that switches to forward facing after 1 year). But he's big for his age. You probably won't have the same problem. And besides it was worth it anyway.

SnugRide carseats fit into a travel system stroller, but I didn't get one of those. They seem bulky to me. I think one of the stroller frame type things might be nice though, where you stick the carseat on the frame and that makes the stroller. That seems less bulky to me. Also I just wasn't that thrilled about Graco strollers in general.

Re: strollers, I didn't get one until Theo was about 3 months old. We just used a Baby Bjorn until then (get the Active kind if you get one--there's extra back support and I think it makes a difference) because it was just easier, plus he was so little. It was also nice because it was cold outside and that kept both of us warm. Might not be so nice in the summer.

At Easter my in-laws gave us a Combi Cosmo EX (here is Combi's Web site), which is similar to a Maclaren Quest, which is what I originally wanted to get but is more expensive. I like the Combi because it's light (about 12 lbs), has a one-handed opening, and also you can push it with one hand. The handle is pretty low though; if your husband is tall it might be a pain. One big reason I like it (besides the weight) is that it reclines all the way back which is good for babies. It holds up to 45 lbs.

I like it especially for its cost too--around $100. It's a nice "midweight umbrella" option. I just got back from a trip to CA and it was great in the airport--I pushed it with one hand and pulled my suitcase with the other. My carseat hooked easily over my suitcase too, which was nice.

And sorry I took so long explaining all of that. Let me know if you'd like any more of my opinions; plenty more where that came from!

  3. Oh yeah, and the Combi Cosmo is I think part of a travel system if you get a Combi car seat.

  4. Katie definitely didn't know what she was getting herself into on that one.

Please note, Katie, that I usually carried the carseat for Eliza when Theo was in it. Funny! To Eliza's credit, he was rather heavy. But I just want to know what she would have done without me or Harry there.

As for the Google question, I'm using the same code that I used before in my template and I haven't been having any problems (knock on wood).

  5. Question--why did you change the script? I liked it better.

  8. Is theo really almost 20 pounds?
    I like your redesign.
    Resist word verification.

  9. Hanner I think maybe you're on a computer that doesn't read the script font. Because I haven't changed it. If that's what you're talking about.

Also, I DO carry Theo in his carseat. Helloooooo. But if someone else is around who is willing to, then I let that person.

I can't help it, when people ask me about baby things I sort of...bleeaaaaaaaahhhhh.

Where did you put the code? I put it near the top again and it wouldn't let me save it.

Mrs. Everything, Hannah is my sister. I'm so glad that you like libraries/librarians. I work in one/am one. "Generally I like it."

    Bonny, thank you.

Emily I haven't gotten him weighed in a while but my guess (and that of strangers I have met--having a big baby = making automatic friends) is around 17 lbs.
