And in the End

So, Moab's over! Along with my half-marathon career.

It was actually really fun, if painful. The best part for me was definitely having a goal and training. I think if I do one again I'll train up to 13 miles--the farthest I had ever gone before yesterday was 10, and so I was feeling great until about mile 10.5, at which point "adrenaline" did not help me to the finish, as everyone promises; rather, the thought of sitting down was the only thing that got me to the end. (There wasn't really anywhere to sit down along the last 3 miles of the race; otherwise I just might have.)

Hannah came in about 15 minutes before I did; and my dad came in WAY before both of us, finishing 1st place in his age group! Yay Dad. And they jogged that last hundred yards with me, which was nice.

I'll post more pics later. If you're good.

  1. Yeah, I guess I should have elaborated beyond just the people in the picture. My dad's time was I think 1:43; Karl and Hannah came in around 2:10-2:15; Matt came in at 2:22; and my watch showed 2:25 when I stumbled in.

I actually stayed close to my 10-minute mile pace goal for about the first 10 miles, since I got to mile 10 in about 1:45. Then it took me 40 minutes to do the last 3 miles. hahaha. Oh well!

Yeah, we're moving...sometime. End of summer, perhaps?

  2. Did you have any goo? I think that's what helped me the most. Except for the fact that my knee felt like it was being sawed off.

  4. hannah do you mean Gu? Bruce loves that stuff. And I relate to your knee pain. You were pretty speedy Hannah.

And Eliza I'm impressed. Excellent training.

  5. I believe she means Gu, although since Clif Bar was a Moab sponsor, it was technically Clif Gel.

I didn't have any...just my homemade Gu of banana/peanut butter mash. I thought earlier that I should try out some gels and see what I liked before the race. I didn't want to try one during the race, in case it was gross and made me barf. And when they were passing it out, around mile 8 I guess?, I heard the words "mango flavor" and "chocolate flavor" and they both just sounded nasty to me. So I stuck with my homemade mixture and Gatorade.

Not that either of those tasted that great, either! Cause they didn't!

  6. P.S. Just to brag about my dad some more, he came in 10 minutes ahead of the 2nd-place finisher in his age group. Speedy daddy. Spaddy deedy.

Okay, I REALLY need to go to bed!

  8. Way to go! Believe it or not, this actually sounds fun. Do they do it every year? Good luck with your move to D.C. also. Everyone keeps moving further and further away.

  9. Yeah, it's every March. The lottery starts I think at the beginning of November? Check it out at moabhalfmarathon.org. You should totally do it! You'll be recovered from having your baby by then, right? I don't know how those things work...haha...but anyway, it is fun. I'd like to do it again next year.
